Hi,
in the last weeks, the modem-fax of my father stopped to
work...usually, after some rebooting I managed to open successfully the
modem-fax, but it's been a single case I believe...
When I right-click on the fax printer and then click on the properties,
it holds for few minutes and then says "Microsoft shared fax driver not
installed", and it asks me to install it...but it opens a dialog where
I should select a driver from a huge list (and my US robotcs doesn't
appear :()
The computer is a Windows XP with SP2 (it's been a while since I
installed it...), and I've always kept it updated...
Any ideas?
Thank you

Daniele

Open the Fax Console and examine the status of the Fax Printer there. What
does it say?
State how and when you installed Fax in relation to SP2.

Hi,
when I open the fax console it hangs for few minutes with
"updating"...and after that it says "No printer fax is available"...and
I cannot see my received/sent fax items!
For the other question, I don't remember exactly...When I installed
Windows XP, I had immediately updated with SP2 and then installed the
fax console...it has been working quite fine for almost a year...
But now it doesn't :((
Bye

Daniele

Many users who have updated an older version of Windows XP to SP2 before
they try to install the fax service appear to be encountering a problem with
the fax service. In these cases there is no error message during the
installation (distinguishing this from the very common problem where the
installation routine states it cannot find the necessary files). The
installation appears to proceed without error, but when it is over there is
no fax printer apparent and any attempt to send a fax results in the error
message "Fax server information cannot be retrieved. The Fax Wizard will now
close." This problem appears to occur because the security data base is
corrupted as documented here:

Hi,
so you believe it's a database corruption? Because, as I said, it's
been working pretty well for almost a year...so, I should use this?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278316/en-us
(Even if I have never saw that kind of messages?)
I'm asking this because I cannot understand which is the hotfix I'm
looking for...I've always kept my father's computer updated...does this
hotfix a name? Like KB>long number> and so on?
Still thank you

Daniele

That's what your current symptoms match the most closely, although your
current status may have been caused by your attempt to reinstall XP Fax. The
original problem may well be different and may persist even if you get the
current problem resolved. You must call Microsoft support for the hotfix.
You cannot download it.
You need to realize that Windows XP Fax is not a reliable or robust program.
It fails for more users than it works, and your modem does not look like one
that is supported.

Alright, I've understood...
Maybe it's not the best place where to ask, but at this point: do you
know ANY Open Source fax program? At this point, I woldn't dare to buy
anything to get "your modem-fax is too old to work this program..."
Thank you

Daniele

I haven't had a chance to try any other programs because I've been one of
the lucky ones who can get XP Fax to work. Hopefully others can offer
suggestions.
