I'm ready to toss this darn computer along with Vista out the window!!!!!
I've only had it a few days. All I'm trying to do is download Paint Shop Pro
X and install it.

I've downloaded twice. Can't find the darn files, even with a search. When
prompted, immediately after downloading, to 'run' the file, I click on it
and nothing happens.

What is going on? I miss Windows XP!!!!! Please help me figure this out.
I'm dying here.

When you download a file, somply pay attention to where you tell Vista
to save it. (The default location is the desktop, of all things.)

If you are using Internet Explorer 7, when you download a file, it shows you
where it's going, and gives you a chance to change the location.

Is PSPX compatible with Vista? Some older programs are not.

I don't know the answer for sure, but I run PSP8 under Vista here
without a problem, so my guess is that newer versions are compatible.

Definitely download it to a folder under your user name. Try the Desktop,
which, from there, you can always move it to a different folder. If the
file is truly downloaded, you won't be able to miss it. I usually drag it
it into the Recycle Bin, if it's a setup file for a program, after running
the installation...

Do you have any anti-virus software running that might be batting it away,
so to speak?

I have disabled my anti-virus and downloaded to c:\user\name\desktop\blah,
blah, blah....it's nowhere on my desktop. When searching for it, clicking
'show hidden files' etc., my computer can't find it. It says it downloaded
104.63 M. Asks to launch, which it won't. Asks to run, which it won't. I
can't even find it to delete it. I seriously don't know what else to do.

To Bruce...obviously you've never had computer problems. I will never give
up on this thing. I stay up way later than normal and give my utmost
attention to my computer probs. This was my frustration speaking as I'm
trying my hardest to resolve this issue and haven't been having any luck
whatsoever. The word 'luck' is also just a figure of speech. There is no
luck with computers.
To

Open windows explorer and look
under...desktop/username/downloads..................
if the file is there ...right click and tick "run as
administrator"...........
see if that works

So how did you download it? I'm doing it online, no CD. I would love your
help.

I didn't download it all. I installed it from the CD.

But as far as downloading a file, it's the same for any file. Read
Dave's answer. It asks you where to download it to. You get the choice
of accepting the default, whatever it's set to, or changing it to
whatever you want. In my case, I download everything to a folder
called \dl that I've created for that purpose.

That's a big file. Before a downloaded file is transferred to your chosen
folder location, its parts, so to speak, are downloaded to the Temporary
Internet Files folder.

Try this. Go to IE7 > Tools > Internet Options, and, on the
General tab, click on Settings, under the "Browsing history" section. In
the new window, next to "Disk space to use", try putting it at an
amount at least half of the highest number of what it says as
"(Recommended)"; for example, if it says 50- 250MB, try at least 125MB (the
default is 50, which is usually enough for browsing). Click OK.

Back on the General tab, under "Browsing history" again, click on Delete,
then click on Temporary Internet Files. Then try a download again.

If that doesn't work, it might be worth a try to create a new administrative
user account, if only temporarily, and see if downloading, while logged in
to the New Account, works. To create a new administrative account, open the
Start Menu, and click on your user picture. This opens Control Panel\User
Accounts. Then click on "Manage another account". Then click on "Create a
new account".

Well, that got me a little further. Thanks! :) But now when I click on '
run as.....' it says cannot find path. Sheesh...the program is right in from
of me. What could that mean?

Did you at one time move your one or more of your user folders (that is,
Music, Downloads, Videos, Pictures, etc.) to a drive that is no longer
connected to your computer? Or did you reconnect the drive, but the drive
letter changed? Can you right-click on the Downloads folder, choose
Properties, and on the Location tab, choose Restore Default?

Hi, Annie.

Without trying to solve all of the problems you've mentioned, let me help
with just one: finding "lost" files.

If you know any part of the filename that you are looking for, and if it is
anywhere on your hard drive, this will find it. Then you can note the full
pathname and use it to get access to the file.

Open an "Administrator:Command Prompt" window. This looks like good old
MS-DOS, but it is a part of Vista. To open this window, click All Programs
| Accessories, and then right-click on Command Prompt and click Run as
Administrator. You'll have to furnish the administrator password. While in
this window, any program you start will "run elevated".

Then use the old MS-DOS "Dir" command, from the days before "directory"
changed to "folder". If you are looking for a file named "Lost.xxx", for
example, and you know that it is somewhere on Drive C:, then type at the
Command Prompt:
dir c:\lost.xxx /s/a

The Dir command produces a listing of all files in the folder that meet the
criteria in the rest of the line. C:\ starts in the Root ("\") of Drive C:,
and "lost.xxx" tells what filename to look for. The /s switch looks in all
subfolders under the starting folder; since you are starting in C:\, it will
list all files on the whole drive. The /a switch tells it to list All
files, even those with Hidden or System attributes. If you know only a part
of the filename, you can use wildcards; dir lo*.* will search only the
current folder for all filenames that start with "lo", no matter what the
rest of the name is.

As usual in a Command Prompt window, typing the command followed by /? will
produce a mini-Help file showing you all the switches and parameters
available for use with that command. For example: dir /?

If you have a big hard drive with lots of files, a full-drive search can
take a long time, maybe long enough for a coffee break.

Good luck!

Hi Dean,

No, I've never moved folders, etc. I just got this computer and 95% of the
time it's on I'm one this site or trying to get PSP to work. I haven't had
time for anything else. If I hit restore default, will it change everything
they did when they set up my computer at the store? Or only a few days back?

One more thing. I noticed when searching for my 'lost' file, that in IE7 it
gives me the option to look for different types of files, eg., HTML, JPEG,
ALL. When I look at my 'annie' folder, I don't get this option. Is this
hiding, too? I feel so bad I keep bothering you but I thought I pretty much
knew a bunch about computers...I guess it was just my 'old' computer I knew.
This Vista is so different.

Well, I finally got it. I found it on my external backup and transferred it
from there. I have a new problem, tho, and will go to a different board for
an answer. FYI...when trying to open I get a message "To start this app for
the first time or to activate it, log in using an admin-level account. From
then on you can use any user account to start this app." The problem is I am
the administrator. :)

Dean...you're wonderful for responding so quickly! I figured that one out a
couple of minutes after I wrote asking for help. (I should've replied to my
own reply. LOL) I am now finishing all the updates/patches to be compatible
with Vista. This has been quite an adventure and learning experience.
Thanks for all your help!

So...do you know anything about replacing hard drives in laptops and then
using the restore disk? That's my new challenge! I want to repair my old
laptop. Best Buy said it would cost $400 and I just can't see spending that
much. I'm sure most of that is labor. This new one only cost $150 more than
that!

I'm going to check on another board and see what's involved. I'll give more
details there.

Thanks again! You've been great...and very reliable.

Annie, I replaced the hard drive in a Toshiba laptop, it was extremely easy
to do. I replaced a failed 40GB drive with an 80 GB drive. Then I used the
restore disks to restore the system (Windows XP). On the bottom of the
laptop you'll see a few "panels". If you can determine whiich one os for
the hard drive, you only need to unscrew the panel and then replace the
drive. What Best Buy is asking to repair is crazy, IMO. You can pick up a
drive for $ 100.00 or less, install it, then restore the system yourself.

Pete, Thank you! I've been looking online for a hard drive. do you have any
suggestions for a reliable site to go to?

So all I have to do is pop the one out, put the other one in and put the
restore disks in? That simple! That's great. Putting all my backed-up
stuff will take longer I imagine.

Are you on the boards often? Can I write back in this thread for more help
if I get into a jam?

Hi Annie. I'm on the board now and then. I don't have a lot to offer but I
have something now and then :)

Feel free to contact me at my personal email address ntotrr@o p t o n l i n
e.net (take out the spaces I inserted in that address.

I bought my drive on ebay. I looked for a good price from a seller with
good feedback rating. I got an 80 GB drive for around $ 80.00 which is far
cheaper than what it would cost at a local big box store like Best Buy. I
referenced the laptop model number in the ebay auction and found one that
fit. I didn't bid on it, I ordered at the "Buy Now" price since it was a
very reasonable price. I put the drive in, loaded the disks, and restored
the system.
