I have a DC with DNS installed with both forward and
reverse lookup zones created. within the forward lookup
zone, under the camelotdomain resides the _tcp subdomains
and none of the others were created, like _tcp, _msdcs,
_udp. I do not know if these are needed or what the
settings are for them. I can create them manually, but do
not understand what to place in for settings. Part 2-
When I run NETDIAG /Q or /FIX it tells me that DNS
test .....failed Cannot find a primary authoritative DNS
server for the name 'camelotdc.camelotdomain.'
(RCODE_SERVER_FAILURE) ANy help would be greatly
appreciated.

This is obviously a single label DNS name (domain vs. domain.com) you will
need to make registry entries for the domain records to be created. 300684 -

Names

Are these changes for the single name domain in the
registry on the local server or the workstation?
And would this have an affect on not being able to do an
nslookup? I do the nslookup and it cannot find the root
server.

You have to make the registry entry for all Win2kSP4, XP or Win2k3 member of
the domain, clients and servers.
Kind of makes you wish you had chosen a different domain name, huh?
I know you can make registry entries in the group policy, I don't know if
anyone has attempted to make these entries through the group policy. It
might be worth a try if you have a lot of machines.

We are now thinking about changing domain names to our new
outside real domain name of camelotgrp.com - Can we just
change the domain name on the DC from a one name domain to
our new camelotgrp.com or should we demote the DC and redo
dcpromo to the new domain? Or should we start with a new
machine all together?

Thanks,
-Mark

You cannot rename a Win2k domain, you have a domain rename option in Win2k3.
819145 - Support WebCast: Microsoft Windows Server 2003: Implementing an
Active Directory Domain Rename Operation
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819145&Product=winsvr2003

If this is a Win2k domain you can create a new domain on another machine a
migrate the users to the new domain
or
Demote the DC then promote it with the correct FQDN of your choice It does
not have to be a registered or even a registerable name as long as it is in
the form of domainname.someTLD.
Demoting means losing all user and computer accounts.

I need Help

Hello Buddies,

I'm responsible in setting up anetwork for the company i'm working in, and Guess What? I know nothing about how can i do that. Never mind i've read some tutorials documents from the internet and i work. but i'm facing a problem that i couldn't find how to solve it plus i don't have time to do search so i'm asking for help from anyone who knows how to solve it.

The network configured as follow: Internet router is connected to a switch providing DNS (ISP), DHCP, and NAT. A Domain Controller server shall be connected to the Switch as well for the domain configuration. We are hosted in a forign company for our company domain name : Company_name.com and for the emails as well.

The server i'm configuring is a domain controller and file server, what i've did exactly is that i've installed the OS (Windows Server 2003 Enterprice Edition), I've added the following roles : Active Directory, File Server, DNS.

During the Active Directory Role installation, i've been asked to define a Full DNS name so i entered the name required Company_Name.net as an internal DNS and i've defined the server as a primary server for DNS with a forwarder to ISP DNS IP address. At the end of the installation, the result of the test was having error i regarding registration of the domain name selected (I cant remember the exact wording of the Error) with three selection i've choosed the middle one that installs something and finalize the installation.

Then i've added users to the Active Directory and Computers as well, and defined and linked a Group policy for the Company OU and ensured that the user is included in the security permission of the GP as Authorize Users. From the Client device, i've added it to the domain and everything goes well (as i could ping the DNS and Server name as well but not the NET BIOS), but the GP i've defined was not applied to the User or Computer. When i searched the internet i found some articles mentioning that the problem might be from the DNS configuration. So i've entered the NETDIAG command and i get a result saying that the DNS has passed the test but with Warning : [WARNING]: Cannot find the primary Authoritative dns serve Server_Name.Domain_Name.net.

I need your help on solving the DNS problem and the GP as well..

Thanks in advance
