I'm having a problem, everytime
I right click on the cd-rom drive
and click explore,
whether its a data cd, or dvd, I
t keeps spawning another My computer
window,
and will not display the contents and folders on the CD-r disc,
I can use DOS cmd.exe to do a dir listing of the contents just fine..
this problem
has plagued me for a while..

The description of the symptoms fit while the title of my page doesn't. Try
this, it's harmless.

Missing CD/DVD Drives:

(XP will recreate them and if you use the automated option it's even easier.
Try the automated option first and if that doesn't work go ahead and do it
manually via kicking the reg entries out and letting XP re-write 'em as more
than likely something has stomped on your upperfilters or lowerfilters. If I
recall properly, if you can see it, then it's upperfilters. So that's the
more likely cause.)

rebooted., and still I canot access the cd rom drive by right clicking and

I really don't know then but let's check something...

The WinKey usually says start and has the Windows logo on it. It's usually
down near the CTRL and ALT keys on a full sized keyboard. A laptop it is up
in the upper right often times.

Press that and hold it, and then press the E key while it's down. (WinKey +
E)

Then clicking on the drive - does it expand it then and let you see the
contents without autoplaying it or coming up negative?

Actually, i never really used those hot keys for explorer, but it still has
the same behavior.. I noticed that highlighting the cd rom as if to expand
the drives contents simply deflects the cursor to the drive it was previously
pointing to..

I'm not sure what to do about it.., Itunes recognized a change in the CD/DVD
drives settings and advised that I reinstall the software after running the
first set of registry key deletions (upperlimit , lowerlimit)

Ah... That's probably your answer. iTunes... That causes all SORTS of issues
with everything from file association to optical drives as it stomps all
through the registry like a crackhead in a public wishing well.

This problem was there before Itunes was installed on my computer.
So thats unfortunately not the culprit..
thanks for your help though

This is a unique one...

The only thing I can think of now is a shell extension. Which? I haven't a
clue though I suspect it is one that has to do with optical drives. You can
look and poke about and maybe get lucky? (Or you could be all logical and
keep track and disable them in an organized manner until you found the
culprit.)

ShellExView:

If you REALLY want to get into the nitty-gritty you can start filtering
stuff out and look for odd called processes...

Process Explorer v9.25:

Finally... A repair install might be required. I'd hoped to avoid it,
there's a minimal chance of data loss and it can be pretty awkward if your
have installed SP2 since and only have an SP1 or non-SP install disk.
