MrBill

I'm not sure if this is the right group for this message, so if it is
wrong, please someone point me in the right direction.

I have 3 desktops, 2 running XP Home and 1 running Vista Home Premium.
All three OS's have been updated to today's date. My problem is that
I cannot download anything from the:

http://download.microsoft.com/

pages from any of the PC's, and that's a LOT of files I can't get at!
The error messages I get are:

- You are not connected to the Internet.
- The website is encountering problems.
- There might be a typing error in the address.

This has been going on like this for a week or so, can anyone help?

Thanks, MrBill

if you can reach other sites, then open an elevated cmd prompt on
vista:

start
all programs
accessoriei

right click Command Prompt then run as administrator (ack the
prompt)

then type in

ipconfig /flushdns [enter]

leave the command prompt window open

can you get to the site after doing this?
if not, type into the command window

tracert download.microsoft.com [enter]

what happens? please paste results in here.

can you reach other microsoft sites?

same process for XP, but you don't need to run as administrator

please try using alternative DNS servers and enter tham in the
properties dialog as static DNS servers on your computer. try
4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2. flush DNS again. does this change things?

start
ncpa.cpl [enter]
right click the connection (ack the UAC prompt) and select
properties

tcp/ip v4
properties button
click check use the following DNS servers and enter the IPs above
apply/ok

flushdns again and see if things change (reboot to be sure)

post results here please. if this cures things, I need the IP addys
of the Comcast DNS servers you were getting via DHCP and I will get
someone to look at the issue.

Can you help?

if you can reach other sites, then open an elevated cmd prompt on
vista:

start
all programs
accessoriei

right click Command Prompt then run as administrator (ack the
prompt)

then type in

ipconfig /flushdns [enter]

leave the command prompt window open

can you get to the site after doing this?
if not, type into the command window

tracert download.microsoft.com [enter]

what happens? please paste results in here.

can you reach other microsoft sites?

same process for XP, but you don't need to run as administrator

Interesting bio, thanks! After you talk to the Comcast techs, please
let me know what you find out and if I can/should change the address
of my Comcast DNS servers back to automatic.

I just downloaded the new MS mouse drivers . . . that's the first time
in about 10 days I've been able to download anything from MS! :)

Thanks, Bill

I'll see who is around on Thursday that can look into the DNS
problem. No I'm not part of Comcast support. Check the bio on the

please try using alternative DNS servers and enter tham in the
properties dialog as static DNS servers on your computer. try
4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2. flush DNS again. does this change things?

Sure did - now I can connect to http://download.microsoft.com/ !
post results here please. if this cures things, I need the IP addys
of the Comcast DNS servers you were getting via DHCP and I will get
someone to look at the issue.

Oops, I have no idea how to do this. If it helps, I am connecting to
Comcast from the NE side of Tucson, AZ. If you still need the DNS
Server address, tell me how to get them for you.

BTW - are you part of Comcast support?

Thanks for everything Barb!

they said they were purging DNS caches. can you try again? remove
the static IP for DNS servers. go back to automatic.
then ipconfig /flushdns and try again.

if you have the problem again, go back to the other DNS servers

Hi Barb,

I tried again with the same problem. After reconfiguring the static
IP for the DNS servers (4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2) things started behaving
again. I've been having this same problem for about a month now, how
long does it take to purge DNS caches?

FWIW, here's the trace with the static DNS IP's:

they said they were purging DNS caches. can you try again? remove

then ipconfig /flushdns and try again.

Did you talk to the techies at Comcast yet?

I will post here when I get a response. Lots of folks are taking
this week as vacation time - may be a few days..

Check the bio on the
Expert Zone or
https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/profile/barb

please try using alternative DNS servers and enter tham in the
properties dialog as static DNS servers on your computer.

Thanks for everything Barb!

if you can reach other sites, then open an elevated cmd prompt on
vista:

start
all programs
accessoriei

right click Command Prompt then run as administrator (ack the
prompt)

then type in

ipconfig /flushdns [enter]

leave the command prompt window open

can you get to the site after doing this?
if not, type into the command window

tracert download.microsoft.com [enter]

what happens? please paste results in here.

can you reach other microsoft sites?

same process for XP, but you don't need to run as administrator

Thanks, MrBill

if you can reach other sites, then open an elevated cmd prompt on

start

right click Command Prompt then run as administrator (ack the
prompt)

then type in

ipconfig /flushdns [enter]

leave the command prompt window open

can you get to the site after doing this?
if not, type into the command window

what happens? please paste results in here.

can you reach other microsoft sites?

same process for XP, but you don't need to run as administrator

Thanks, MrBill

the plot thickens...

you appear to have a router based on what I see below. correct? it
is likely that this is a Comcast supplied all in one device (Linksys
or Netgear..?)

whatever it is, it is proxying DNS and I can't tell exactly where
the blame is. the standard trouble shooting is to configure
Comcast's DNS servers in the router in the appropriate space in the
administrative pages of the router itself and not let it proxy DNS,
but I'm not sure that the Comcast devices allow this.

The DNS server IPs vary depending on where you live.

If you can't configure the DNS servers statically in the router, you
need to get then to swap it out. Call and tell them that the DNS
proxy is failing (if it IS a Comcast supplied device). If it isn't
Comcast supplied, you should be able to configure the DNS IPs, but
you will need to call and ask them for the info for your locale (or
better, get it from a neighbor if you can).

Hi Barb,

I tried again with the same problem. After reconfiguring the static

again. I've been having this same problem for about a month now, how
long does it take to purge DNS caches?

Yes, I have a Linksys router which I lease from Comcast for $5 per
month. Interesting that I've used this same device for 3.5 years now
but only had problems, for the last month, and only with the MS
download pages. One of the things the $5 gets me is network support
with their techs. I'll call them tomorrow and let them take over . .

it well enough! :)

steps on an XP machine with exactly the same results. Then I shut off
all firewalls on the Vista PC - same results again.

Can you help?

if you can reach other sites, then open an elevated cmd prompt on
vista:

start
all programs
accessoriei

right click Command Prompt then run as administrator (ack the
prompt)

then type in

ipconfig /flushdns [enter]

leave the command prompt window open

can you get to the site after doing this?
if not, type into the command window

tracert download.microsoft.com [enter]

what happens? please paste results in here.

can you reach other microsoft sites?

same process for XP, but you don't need to run as administrator

Thanks, MrBill

tell them the trouble shooting you did by configuring the other DNS
servers on the computer --

Yes, I have a Linksys router which I lease from Comcast for $5 per
month. Interesting that I've used this same device for 3.5 years now
but only had problems, for the last month, and only with the MS
download pages. One of the things the $5 gets me is network support
with their techs. I'll call them tomorrow and let them take over . .
. then I'll let you know what they say and do, that is if I understand
it well enough! :)

- Bill

the plot thickens...

you appear to have a router based on what I see below. correct? it
is likely that this is a Comcast supplied all in one device (Linksys
or Netgear..?)

whatever it is, it is proxying DNS and I can't tell exactly where
the blame is. the standard trouble shooting is to configure

If it isn't
Comcast supplied, you should be able to configure the DNS IPs, but
you will need to call and ask them for the info for your locale (or
better, get it from a neighbor if you can).

it should be pretty instant. i need you to run ipconfig /all without
the 4.2.2.x statics and paste the entire output into a reply

Hi Barb,

I tried again with the same problem. After reconfiguring the static
IP for the DNS servers (4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2) things started behaving
again. I've been having this same problem for about a month now, how
long does it take to purge DNS caches?

FWIW, here's the trace with the static DNS IP's:

they said they were purging DNS caches. can you try again? remove
the static IP for DNS servers. go back to automatic.
then ipconfig /flushdns and try again.

if you have the problem again, go back to the other DNS servers
configured statically.

Did you talk to the techies at Comcast yet?

I will post here when I get a response. Lots of folks are taking
this week as vacation time - may be a few days..

Check the bio on the
Expert Zone or
https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/profile/barb

please try using alternative DNS servers and enter tham in the
properties dialog as static DNS servers on your computer.

- Bill

Hi Barb,

It did not fail connecting to Microsoft.Com, I just terminated the run
at that time. Here it is again, interrupted only because the last
line was repeating over and over:

It failed immediately when I tried to TRACERT to:

I can connect to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ with no problem.

An example of a full URL that fails is:

Thanks, Bill

ok, when it starts timing out with the ****, hit ctrl-C to stop it
from trying. then copy the whole thing to the clipboard and paste it
in here. looking to see where it is failing. can't do that without
the last entries.

can you get to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ ?

can you give me an example of the full URL of one of these that
fails?

I just talked to Comcast network support, but unfortunately did not
have one of their top level support persons on the line. What he told
me was that this problem had cropped up earlier and until now he
thought it had been corrected. Since obviously it hasn't, he's
putting in another trouble report. In the meantime, he told me that
the static DNS assignments will continue to work, will not create any
problems downloading with from other services, and that I should just
leave them as is.

So I guess this is a "solved problem", although I'd feel better
knowing if/when the automatic DNS servers are working again with MS
downloads.

Thanks for everything Barb, you've gone well beyone the call of duty
on this one!

yes, the problem was resolved long ago with firmware upgrades to
these devices. and yes, using static DNS should continue to work
without issue.

good luck.
