cannot download files using internet explorer

I am not sure what setting has changed but now whenever I
click a link for downloading a file it shows the file
download dialog however after about half a minute to a
minute it will time out and it will display the message:
"Internet Explorer cannot download xxxx from xxx.xx.xxx.xxx
(ipaddress)"
"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet
site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot
be found. Please try again."

I can use FTP to download files and that is working. So I
am not sure why I cannot click on ANY download link on the
browser that is actually suppose to download a file.

Any help will be appreciated. I am running
IE Version: 6.0.2800.1106IC. I was previously running with
IE version: 5 and had the same problem.

Right-click one of the links you are havimg trouble with choose Copy shortcut and paste in your response.

I am having the same problem. I cannot find the answer yet in the news
groups. Were you able to correct this problem?

Thanks,
John Morley

Hi Tim :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

First of all make sure you are in Administartor of the computer so your
account is not locked down.
Go to Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom level>scroll down to Download
section and check the File Download box.
Then go to the Advanced tab>press the "Restore Default" button.

Your problem may be caused by a bad BHO.

Most importantly, download install and run CWShredder here

and About Buster, which searches for hidden .dlls that recreate the malware.

Then visit these two sites to test for parasites and help basic cleaning:
On-Line Check

and

Basically, throw everything here at your "infection".

Then download, install and immediately update these three programs before

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Download PocketKkillbox from

Jan,

Thanks you very much for all the info and tips.

I have spent hours to try all I could. After I deleted all my cookies,
history files and internet temp files, there was some improvements, such as I
could download some files which I couldn't. I could download winfix,
winsockfix but not winsockxpfix; I could download ClearType Tuner, Tweak UI,
Power Calculator, Image Resizer, CD Slide Show Generator and Taskbar
Magnifier but not the rest of the fies on the Microsoft Power Toy site
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx>.
I downloaded winsockxpfix from other PC. After running winsockxpfix,
everything seemed back to the old situation. Now I restored my registry back
to before I run winsockxpfit.

I am about to giving up. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
