Cannot download files in IE6

Chris

I have a problem with IE6 that has just started today.

When I try to download a file the 'save to location' box appears followed by
the download progress box, but the download states it has completed after 1
second irrespective of the length of the file - e.g. a 10MB file will finish
in 1 second and only 60K will actually be saved to disk. There are no error
messages whatsoever anywhere. This seems to happen with practically all
types of file, although occasionally a file (eg an MP3) will download
properly if I select 'run' rather than 'save'.

I have tried resetting IE to its default settings and clearing the cache and
history. Norton Internet Security reports that they system is free of
viruses and spyware.

I am running IE version 6.0.2900.2180 and windows XP SP2 with Norton
Internet Security 2006 (disabling NIS does not fix the problem). The PC is
an HP Pavilion 5251 with an Athlon 64 3800+ and 1GB RAM.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks.

The problem has compunded itself now.

I have found that another machine of ours (a brand new Comnpaq) has almost
exactly the same problem. When I first try downloading a file it says it has
completed in 1 second (irrespective of the file length) even though it is
incomplete. The next and subsequent time I try downloading the same file I
get a 'connection with the server was reset' error message. If I then clear
the temporary internet files the first problem reocurrs.

The same problem on two separate meachines? IE6 with SP2 must have a major
fault somewhere.

Has anyone got any ideas, please?

Chris.

Hi,
Go a step beyond clearing the cache. Delete the Temporary Internet Files
folder. A new one will be created on restart.

Make sure that you can see hidden files (Folder Options> View) Then
login as another user with administrator privileges, or from the machine's
default administrator account (startup in safe mode) and delete the affected
TIF folder from Windows Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files]

315222 - A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222

You would not be able to delete this folder when logged in as
yourself- it's "In use." You should be able to delete it from the
Administrator account.

It's often recommended that the TIF folder size be set to about 50 MB.
That's set at Internet Options> General> Temporary Internet Files> Settings.
The default size setting for the cache is usually much too large.

Also... are you sure that NIS was disabled? Any other security programs
running? If running a third-party firewall, turn on the Windows Firewall and
disable the other (as a test.)

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi Don,

Thanks for the reply. I had already tried deleting the TIF index file using
another user account but it did not solve the problem. However making sure
NIS 2006 personal firewall was disabled permanently and switching windows
firewall back on does seem to have fixed the problem - at least I seem to be
able to download files again.

This is the second major problem I have had caused by NIS - the first
problem (using NIS 2005) was that it prevented IE6 accessing URLs manually
entered into the address bar unless the full path was entered. I know this
is probably the wrong group to ask as it is not a strictly IE6 question, but
since NIS 2005 and 2006 both seem to be useless piles of junk does anyone
have a suggestion as to the best and least problematic internet security
suite available?

Thanks again,

Chris.

If you have a router with a firewall the firewall part of NIS is only useful
for detecting outgoing attempts and then it's only really useful if you are
knowledgeable enough about what should "Not" be connecting to use the info.
This part is easily accomplished using Kerio Personal if you want it.

For Antivirus protection I have used AVG for a long time with no problems,
although of course I am also careful about what I get in email and stuff....

AVG bundle Kerio with one of their systems so you could look there if you
wish. Personally I think it's better to have AV doing AV and FW doing FW as
separate entities, so I do not think McAfee is a good idea, and Zone Alarm
seems to have gone down the all things to everybody path too. As for Pop Ups
the IE built in thing works within reason, I mean if you are going to go to
"Idiot" websites well there's nothing much that will protect you :)

These run well alongside MS Antispyware and there are no conflicts with
AdAware or Spybot.

All the other AV products seem okay, Panda, Trend, Kaspersky etc but Kerio
seems like the most friendly firewall.

There are numerous non viral but malicious (Hacker style) trojans out there
which most AV products ignore, for those I suggest BoClean which does not
scan, it sits waiting for one to try something and jumps on it. This is a
much more certain method than scanning encrypted files and is very light on
resources.

www.grisoft.com www.nsclean.com and www.kerio.com might be of interest but
by all means get other suggestions.

(We almost all agree about NIS)
