Cannot download files from the Internet

I am using IE Version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 on XP Pro
with SP2 and for a while now, I have been unable to download any files
from the Internet. The File Download dialog just opens and I might
get 1 or 2 packets but then it just stops and eventually times out. I
have seen a lot of posts regarding this problem (it looks quite common
among XP users) but not a single resolution as of yet.

Is anyway aware of this problem and have a resolution?

Please help.

Thanks

Well, I have Windows 98 and I had this same problem a couple of years ago and
it took me quite some time to get it figured out. I fixed my problem by
deleting all of my Temporary Internet Files, also check the box that says
delete all offline content, deleting my history, deleting my Temp files,
going to outlook express and compacting all folders. Then I did a scandisk
and defrag, restarted my computer and I could download again. I don't know if
this will work for you, but it did for me. If that doesn't work, you can
order Netscapes CD and put that browser on your computer. I did that before I
found a fix and used it for downloading from the internet. It worked just
fine. I had done that because it took me 6 months to fix my downloading issue
in IE.
Good Luck,
Kemm
