Unable to save .gif , .jpeg, .jpg as their original format but only able to
save as .bmp.

The solution is very simple. Clear the Temporary Internet Folder.

Open Internet Explorer
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the General tab.
Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.

If the problem persists, vist the URL given below:

I tried. Went to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810978 and removed
downloaded program files, damaged and undamaged. Can get gif files
from some sites but not from http://www.gifs.net/animate/page156.htm.
Why?

I can save unanimated versions of them using right-click Save Picture As...
Just override the .bmp extension by typing what name you want to save it
as with .gif as the extension.

The only way that I have found to save the animated versions
is to save the complete page. E.g. one way is to use
File, Send, Page by E-mail and then save that
with a .mht extension. That saves the whole page.

Note: I can save other animated .gifs using the right-click Save Picture As...
method; so there must be something peculiar about these images that
it doesn't work with them.
