Cannot deselect desktop icons.....

What could be the problem when you single click on a desktop icon, you then
single click on another desktop icon, but the first icon you clicked on
doesn't automatically deselect? So...you might single click on four icons,
ending up with them all selected, and then if you double click on (say) the
fifth icon all the pre-selected icons launch their programs !!!

I guess it could be likened to holding down shift??? But I aint and the
keyboard doesn't exhibit any problems that might contribute to the above
problem.
