Cannot delete file

Pete

I first noticed the file when I defragged. The defragger stated that it
could not defrag a specific file. Then, as admin, I looked for that file.
It was under Temporary Internet Files under a user's Office area. I
looked at the file and saw that it was 0 bytes. I tried to delete it
when no one else was logged in, and received the error dialog
"Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk."
I ran CHKDSK/F a few times but it did nothing to change the file's
status. I cannot rename the file or move it, either. Any hints on how
to delete this file? Thanks.

What file?

It is named google[1] with a directory name of
user.Office/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE5/X0CN950T

Or were you being sarcastic, referring to the fact that it is really only
a pointer remaining from a Windows screw-up?

After backup you might try running;
chkdsk /r
from the recovery console command line. (/r implies /f and /p)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows XP
CD-Rom. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows
XP installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

Also you can try deleting from the recovery console. First you'll need to
Control Panel|Admin Tools|Local Security Policy Recovery console: "Allow
floppy copy and access to all drives/folders" set to enabled

Then from the recovery console command line;
SET allowallpaths = TRUE

to gain access to all folders and try deleting from here.

Pete, have you tried Internet Options> Temporary Internet Files> Delete
Files> (okay delete for offline files)? Or using the View Files screen to
delete this item? Have run into a few things in TIF that are troublesome to
delete via the Windows GUI but delete fine using Internet Options.

Yes, I tried that before, and it did not erase the file.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is View Files? Is that a
DOS command? I've never really played with DOS, having
been a Unix user for many years.

While in Internet Options> Temporary Internet Files, click on Settings. In
the next screen that appears will be several buttons. View Files is one of
them.
