I have a large .avi file in my videos which I cannot
delete, supposedly because some other program is using
it. I restarted in diagonstic mode via msconfig, but
still cannot delete the file. Any suggestions? it is
occupying over 3 gigabytes of disk space.

To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry
key.

Goto Start>>Run>>Type "regedit" goto

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850D
C73E}\InProcServer32] - Delete this key

This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file
property queries on these files.

Or hold the shift key as you drag the .avi to the trash

Hi Ralph,

Close all open apps. Open a command prompt (Start/Run/CMD) and navigate to
the directory with the offending file(s). Then open the Task Manager and
click on the Processes tab, select "explorer.exe" under the Process Tab.
Click "End Process".

In the opened Command Prompt, DEL the offending files (DEL *.mpg, DEL
mus*.avi, DEL test.wmv, etc.) Once done, go back to the task manager and
click on File/New Task (Run). In the dialog, type explorer.exe and click OK.
