Cannot delete an empty folder in XP Home 'My Documents"

I have a folder containing 0 bytes that I cannot delete. The folder is not
read-only or hidden.
When I try to delete the folder I get the following error message:- Cannot
delete file - cannot read from source file or disk. I also get the same
error message when I try to rename the folder or, drag it to the recycle bin
or use the highlite & delete key.
The folder was leftover from when I was trying to copy a DVD so I've run HD
searches using the folder name to see if there were any other hidden
instances of it but on showed up. I then tried unsuccessfully to delete the
offending folder by stopping each and every process in the Task Manager.
I've search the various Discussion Groups for similar problems and have
tried all the suggestions that are shown. I've also searched online and
tried numerous suggestions that I found but they were all unsuccessful.
I realize this folder is only a nuisance but I'd really like to get rid of it.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.

Have you tried in safe mode?

I've used - Utility for Deleting Invalid Files
http://www.purgeie.com/delinv.htm
For invalid/UNC file/folder name deleting, rather than the in use problem

Use at your own risk though.

Thank you for the suggestion. I downloaded 'PurgeIE' and got the following
message when I search for an invalid folder name: Folder ends with ' ' -
C:\Documents and Settings\Richard\My Documents\THE_QUEEN

However, when I tried to delete the folder, rename it, and to delete it at
boot I was unsuccessful. I've tried to do this in both normal and safe modes
without success.

I'd be most grateful for any more suggestions (other than reinstalling
Windows!!)?

Killbox didn't work either.
Yes, I've defragged and run chkdsk.
I guess I'm going to have to live with the folder until I reinstall Windows
at a future date.
Thanks for your time and help.

I also have the same problem when emptying the recycle bin.
I have 7 PC's networked and they all have the same problem.
Strange that all 7 PC's now have the same problem, virus?

Ive been having the same problem and i spent hours looking for the
answer and i think I've got something thats pretty fool proof, I
downloaded tons of different programs and dozens of different methods
from the cmd window to editing registry values and this is what
finally worked for me.
Delete FXP Files Classic:
http://www.jrtwine.com/products/dfxp/index.htm

now ive never used fxp so I'm sure that it wasn't fxp related but this
seemed to do the job nothing else would. On top of that i was able to
open the folder that had previously said the folder didn't even exist.

theres a few catches, when i tried to delete the first time it
wouldn't let me i had to open the folder that i wanted to
deleted(which i previously had been unable to open) and delete a bunch
of crap that was in it the second more shatty catch is that in order
to use this program you have to purchase a serial for it or crack it
(but i don't condone or suggest that)

hope this helped

Thanks Aphilio; I turned on all views, system files and hidden files with no
luck. I than used Delete FXP, two files showed up in the Recycler folder
under c:\, INFO2 and desktop.ini. I erased both only to have them comeback,
still needing help.

Both the "desktop.ini" and INFO2 files are normally created/
maintained by Windows. You should not have to delete them under
normal circumstances, and even if you do, they will likely be
recreated on you.

Have you checked the access control Lists, this is the method that
Windows XP uses to control whom, can or cant read or write to a file,
I'd also recommend left flicking the folder in question and seeing if th
box next to read only is checked this could be part of the issue9
(though not possible.

***************************************
Resolution:

1. Boot in Safe Mode
2. navigate to directory that contains file or folder in a command
prompt
3. cacls filename(orfoldername) /P username:perm
example: i deleted the following folder by going to the deepest level
and deleting the files there then coming up to delete the root folder.

the folder i was trying to delete was called backups with a sub folder
path of \music\songs\lyrics\songa.mp3
navigate to \lyrics so when you dir you see songa.mp3 in the list.
cacls songa.mp3 /P administrator:F (administrator is the account i
used) (F is for Full permission)
are you sure Y/N (select yes)
delete the file.

It cleaned me up...i then ran a chkdsk /f /r because the folder said
it had 800mb in it, but all i could see was a 2mb file. Sometimes
windows just goes out to lunch. GOOD LUCK!!

Have you checked the access control Lists, this is the method that
Windows XP uses to control whom, can or cant read or write to a file,
I'd also recommend left flicking the folder in question and seeing if th
box next to read only is checked this could be part of the issue9
(though not possible.

Resolution:

GOOD LUCK!!
