cannot copy video

I have just bought a new laptop and have successfully downloaded some music cd's but i cannot copy a dvd i have a laptop that has a dvd writer in and have bought what i hope is the right compatable discs but im getting an error message saying that there is no disc inserted any ideas?

You need to determine if your DVD burner uses +R or -R media. You might
have bought the wrong media. Going to Start|My Computer, right-clicking on
the drive and checking out Properties|Hardware may give you an indication.
If not, try going to the manufacturer's website to see what media your
burner writes to.

You didn't ask about how to "rip" a movie from a DVD, so I'll save that info
for a future post.

You should just be able to use disc copy from the likes of Nero. Now if the
disc is copy protected then that won't work.
