Cannot copy text -- no display of text on cllipboard viewer

Win2000 Pro SP4

I've seen this in the past on WinXP and WinNT4 PCs too. Yet Microsoft
Knowledge Base has nothing about it.

Cannot copy and paste text within any file (including Notepad files) or
between files. The problem appears to be with an unstable clipbrd.exe
because when I open it to see what is going on, there is no display of text
there. Instead I see a blinking solid bar across the field of its window.
That blinking bar slowly advances down the field, disappears for a moment,
then reappears at the top of the field, then repeats the cycle; not unlike
the display that one would see on a TV screen that has been tuned to a
channel for some small station that has quit broadcasting for the night ;-)

This is annoying. I have to restart the computer from a complete shutdown
(not from hibernate) in order to clear the problem, and the problem occurs
often. Often times I have a number of web pages up, and don't want to lose
them, as it took time for me to search for them. So if I instead put the PC
into hibernation and then restart, the problem with clipbrd.exe is not
cleared.

Have searched Google groups archives thoroughly. Many people have posted
problems with copy-paste over the years, but few were aware of clipbrd.exe.
Moreover, respondants to their posts usually never asked them to check out
what was going on with clipbrd.exe. So over the years the problem never got
solved.

Start | Run <type in> services.msc <enter>

Make sure your clipbook service is running and normal.

I have seen a few references to this problem. All of
them were caused by malware/spyware/virus infections.
This is most likely why you cannot find any mention
in the MS Knowledge Base. Scan your PC with an
up-to-date version of a good virus checker, and check
it for malware too.

Thanks, but I've checked the system with updated Grisoft AV utility and
updated Spybot adware/malware utility. No problems were reported by the AV
utility, and only some cookies were found by Spybot.

Maybe its mere coincidence, but it seems like the problem occurs only after
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 has been already started.

Spybot won't catch everything.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
