I have to reformat a computer that seems to have major problems.
I pulled the ide hdd and put it my computer and have been copying
data to a folder. Some files (the owner.wab address book for outlook
express) won't copy. It says "Cannot copy Owner: The request could
not be performed because of an I/O device error."

I have tried to google that message but can't find anything that makes
sense. I get the same message when I try to copy the inbox.dbx from
outlook express.

Help please!!!

I put the hdd back in the original computer and even though it is working
very
slowly, I went to location of owner.wab and moved it onto the desktop as
an experiment. That works fine. But I can't copy it back to it's original
location
within the same hdd.

I was able to do the same thing with inbox.dbx.

When I try to copy either of them, I get the message:
"Cannot copy Inbox: Data eror (cyclic redundancy check)."

Was Outlook Express running at the time. Shut it off.....

If that dont work, boot to a DOS prompt and you should be able to copy
anything. Of course you may lose any long filenames, so only copy the
offending files that wont copy from in windows. OR get a copy of
pkzip 2.0 for Dos. Zip the entire outlook express folder and sub
folders. Pkzip 2.0 will retain long filenames. I dont use Outlook
Exp. or even have it on my harddrive. so I can not comment on the
purpose of those files. They could have a read only attribute.

From the dos prompt, type attrib *.* -s -h -r

That will remove all oddball attributes.

Thanks, I will save this for future problem of this nature. Time ran out
on me and I had to reformat without the .wab and inbox.dbx. Fortunately,
there was a backup of the .wab and the inbox didn't matter. It was very
curious though.

Thanks again for your thoughts.
