I am a computer technician and this baffles me! I have two Home Premium
desktops with the latest windows updates. I had them sharing files and moved
offices. When I set them up with a new router, they do not see each other.
Network discovery, file sharing, etc is all turned on. The router is not
blocking the connections, they both connect to the internet fine. They
cannot ping one another but can access the shared printer. I tried a new
linksys router vs the 2wire dsl router and still have the same problem. I
disable Norton AV and the windows firewall on both and am still not able to
see the computers. I need this fixed soon so if you have any suggestions
please let me know!

For the troubleshooting, start both computer with clean boot. Can you ping
each other now?

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall .(LAN allowed)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames, and
passwords (they can be different) on ALL computers in your Network). If you
have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to
access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista Computer.

Ok first thing first.. It has taken me months to figure this out because
apparently most MVP's are not saying anything about it.

1) Login to CONTROL PANEL, USER ACCOUNTS and make sure that you create a
login password for EACH OF YOUR USERS! Then exit.

2) You then need to do this http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm

MAKE SURE THAT YOU: Uncheck Users must enter a user name and password to
use this computer option, and click Ok. Type the user account password and
complete the process.

3) Then make sure that your network is correctly setup as per other
instructions. If you do not do these two steps, you will be able to see the
other computers but you wont be able to actually login to file share.

Seriously MICROSOFT needs to simplify this! There is no reason why that so
many people are having this problem. WHERE IS AN AUTOMATED NETWORK WIZARD TO
HELP PEOPLE SETUP THEIR NETWORK? XP has it! SHEESH!!!
