I can't seem to connect to the internet. I used to be able
to connect earlier via DHCP but now, I do get the "NEtwork
connection available" message and the laptop is able to
send and receive packets.

However, it can't seem to get a valid IP address. FOr most
part, it takes the automatic private IP -
162.131.something.

Please Help!
asita.

p.s: The problem started when I was trying to connect to
another DHCP and appeared to have screwed up.

could you give a few more details of your situation. Is
this a home network or work? do you have a dhcp server at
work or are you getting an address from a router/ISP?

the automatic APIPA addresses always begin 169.254.x.x
with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0

If you are getting an address of 162.131.x.x this is a
valid public ip address, probably assigned by your ISP
(or works' network if this is your situation)

you said that you were trying to contact another dhcp
server - which one?? - you don't normally specify a dhcp
server, the machine simply broadcasts a request for an
address over the local subnet and waits for a reply from
any dhcp server that may be out there.

Are you able to browse the network/internet?-if so, it
doesn't sound like you have a problem. If you can't,
please post back with more details/errors/error messages
etc

I have DHCP at work

No, it isn't a valid IP

NO, I am not able to browse the net. When I try to ping
any website, I do not get any response. IE and Netscape
don;t work either.

WHen I try ipconfig/renew, it gives me a message
like "Failed to connect to local area network. Error
accessing ........". The IP address I receive isn't a
valid one.

Thanks!

okay, several points/checks.
If you are getting an address in the range 169.254.x.x
this means that you are not contacting a dhcp server.

1 check that your network card is enabled and functioning
in device manager

if you are getting a 169.254 address: (can you ping the
loopback 127.0.0.1)
1. check that your NIC is enabled and functioning in
device manager
2. check all network cables/replace with a known working
one
3. check that your dhcp server is online, working and has
sufficient addresses in it's scope to hand out

if you are definitely getting an address in the
162.131.x.x range, this is a valid PUBLIC address (not
the same as being valid on your network)and must be
coming either from a dhcp server or is statically
configured.
1. check your LAN TCP properties - is it set for static
or dynamic address
2. if static, either change to "automatic" (dhcp)or
change for a static one that is valid on your network
(but not in the dhcp scope), make sure that the subnet
mask is appropriate for the address and your network.Make
sure that the default gateway is correct (the first
router/server that you come to)

in either case, try pinging your gateway address. if this
doesn't get a response, you either have a bad network
connection (cable etc) or the gateway hardware is
suffering a problem.

you might also want to scan for any viruses/spyware (i've
just dealt with a problem this morning where spyware was
preventing IE from opening)

If all else fails, then you may have to remove and
reinstall your NIC and drivers

if you need to post again, accurate error messages (word
for word) may help a diagnosis - also any information on
how your network operates (addressing structure/subnets
etc)
