Hello,

I have an odd situation here. A friend's computer (Windows 2000) had all
sorts of malware installed on it, and in the process of trying to flush
everything out, I've ended up with a situation where the following happens:

1. I fire up Internet Explorer and get a dial-up prompt with all the
connection details filled in (he uses dial-up).

2. I connect to the Internet by clicking 'Connect'

3. Internet Explorer displays the default page.

4. I open up another instance of Internet Explorer.

5. I find this second instance and successive instances cannot connect.

All I can add to this is that there were some strange non-standard Windows
services installed 'illegally' - like msndn.exe and slserv.exe. I used a
combination of a registry and file system deletions to get rid of these.

Is there any advice anyone can give me on restoring full connectivity to
this computer?

TIA,

TIA,

In view of the history of the machine, you probably have two
choices:
a) Use Firefox instead of IE, or
b) Reload the machine from scratch.

Everything else is likely to absorb huge amounts of time
with no guarantee of success. It's just not worth it.
