Hi
I have been unable to reconnect with http://localhost/websiteName since:
.. reformatting hard disk
..reinstalling windows XP (Upgrade with SP2)
.. reinstalling from Control Panel>AddEdit Software>Windows components IIS
with front page extensions (from Upgrade with SP2 disk)
.. reinstalling Office 2003 and Frontpage 2003.
.. Installing Visual Web Developer Express 2008 as I want to convert my asp
site into asp.Net
.. installing all the updates that automatically download from microsoft

But now I cannot get FrontPage to publish to the local host. I get the
error :
"The server could not complete your request. Contact your internet service
provider or web server administator to make sure that the server thas the
FrontPage Server Extensions or SharePoint Services installed."

I have installed and uninstalled the FP extensions from Control
Panel>add/edit software>Windows components>IIS and clicked the server
extensions in the details area.

I had no trouble connecting with http://localhost/WebsiteName before the
format and reinstalling.

I have searched the internet for about two days looking for what is wrong
and am now quite frustrated.

I have also added localhost to the sites in IE8
(Options>Security>LocalIntranet
But all to no effect.

Any help would be appreciated.

Right click My Computer and select manage.
In the management console click the plus by services and applications.
Click the plus by Internet information services and then Web sites.
Right click Default Web site and select properties.
Click the directory security tab.
In the Anonymous access and authentication control section, click the Edit button
At the bottom of the Authentication methods dialog, check Integrated Windows authentication
Click Ok or Apply all of the way out and then restart IIS or reboot the machine.

Thanks Steve

I appreciate your rsponse. I had seen that approach in other posts but it
did not work for me.

BUT I did finally figure it out.

Solution:
.. Delete Inetpub directory completely (I needed to do this by subfolders,
otherwise XP wouldn't let me do this)
.. I reinstalled FrontPage and noticed that this did not fully populate Inetpub
.. I uninstalled IIS and then reinstalled IIS (including the FrontPage
Extensions)

AND BINGO IT ALL WORKED !!!!

I realise that I should have mentioned that I had copied in my documents etc
from a backup. As part of this I also copied the Inetpub directory. I
suspect the Inetpub directory contains installation specific information and
by replacing this with my backup from an earlier installation caused IIS to
say that Sharepoint or Frontpage Server Extensions were not installed. This
error reading remained even after multiple uninstall/reinstall cycles of both
FP and IIS+ServerExtensions. The trick lay in deleting Inetpub.

Thanks again for your assistance and I hope my explanation and fix will
assist the many others who struggle with getting FP Server Extensions to work.

Cheers...Alan

Glad you got is working
- My 1st response told you to start by removing the Inetpub folder you created from your backup
