joe

I have a computer that is part of our domain, is listed in
AD, but cannot be connected to over the network.
I can ping the ip of the computer but cannot connect to it
any other way.
I.E. cannot connect to \\compname\c$ or \\IPaddr\c$,
cannot find it in Nethood, cannot search for it and find
it, all attempts time out.
It is on the network, can browse other computers from it,
can hit the internet from it.
this is a laptop that is not normally on our network,
indeed it has not been on it for several months.
I have left it on the network overnight, hoping things
would 'sync up', but nothing yet.

Anyone have any ideas on this one?

Is there a firewall on the computer? If so, what happens when you uninstall
it?

If this is not a firewall issue, check Event Viewer for errors. Restart the
Server service.

Thanks for the reply Doug,
funny thing, when I go into Computer Management, and click
on the plus sign next to Services and Applications, it
gives me this message:

Title bar: Internet Services Manager
Error connecting to <computername>

The service cannot be started, either because it is
disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated
with it.
Do you wish to continue to attempt to connect to it in the
future?
yes no

So...what the heck does that mean? and what is causing it?
There are DCOM errors in the system log, basically stating
what the err msg above stated.

and in the App log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: W3Ctrs
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1003
Date: 8/27/2004
Time: 3:58:59 PM
User: N/A
Computer: NB99
Description:
Unable to query the W3SVC (HTTP) service performance data.
The error code returned by the service is data DWORD 0.

IIS is not running on this machine.

also, there is no firewall on this machine.

TIA

Hmmm. Check Performance/System Monitor and make sure you are not running
IIS related counters. Maybe try installing and uninstalling IIS?
