Running WindowsXP (updated from sp2 to sp3 *since* problem began with
no change). I've tried IE6, then upgraded to IE7. Also tried Firefox
3. IE will load "http://www.yahoo.com" but nothing else and no other
pages on that site (ip addresses won't work either). It won't load
"yahoo.com" have to enter the full url. Firefox won't load anything at
all. I can ping urls (google.com, cbs.com) most of the time. Sometimes
it says can't find host, but the next time it will work. Can access
shares on the local network, but can't access local printer web
utility. Disabled firewall & antivirus with no change. Any ideas or
troubleshooting tips?

There may have been a more intelligent solution, but the one that
worked for me was running the winsockfix utility. I think the problem
originated when the user ran AVG antivirus and removed a number of
viruses. That is when the problem with loading webpages began. I wish
I was more intelligent about what settings were corrupted by the
removal of the viruses. I only know that running the winsockfix
utility fixed the problem. Running AVG antivirus then removed a number
of other viruses, followed by running SDFix to remove even more
viruses.

How can I learn more about diagnosing problems like this? Both the
internet problems and finding and removing viruses?

Thank you,
Randy W. Sims
