I've got a mixed network with 4 workstations. The primary network is Novell
for file storage. For printing, there is a Toshiba copier with a network
card and the added capability to be used as a printer and network scanner.
The printer function is connected and working through a standard TCP/IP port
connection on all 4 workstations. The copier has an internal hard drive that
is setup to be shared through the network as part of a Windows workgroup.
The workstations are two tower units with Win XP Pro, one
notebook/laptop with Win XP Pro and one laptop with Windows XP Home. All
units have SP2 and all the latest updates.
The issue at hand is that the laptops are not seeing the shared drive
on the copier. The tower units can see and access the drive with no
problems. I've gone through the same steps with the laptops as I did with
the towers but they still not see the copier. They will however see all the
computers within the workgroup. Also all the workstations connect to the
Novell server with no problem.
I've checked all the workgroup names and they are correct. I've ran
the Home Network install utility which you have to do in order to get the
workstations to see the drive of the scanner/copier. Do the wireless cards
play any role in this? That is the only major difference between the
laptops and towers.
If anyone has any insight into this problem your help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you.

Wireless / wired network adapter "should" work the same way no matter
what. However, as with "all" network issues, you must do all the
following:

1) All networked devices need to be on the same IP network and use the
same sub-net mask (ex.: 192.168.1.xxx / 255.255.255.0)

2) All PCs (tower, desktop and laptops) need to be in the same
workgroup. XP Home can not "join" a Windows domain.

3) Check with all/any firewall software, including SP2's built-in
firewall and several anti-virus softwares. I know for a fact that
Norton Anti-Virus 2006 (and higher) has a hidden "firewall like"
module know as Interent Worm protection. Try disabling this.

As for the mopier device, without more details, the only thing to to
tell you to make sure that you install the manfacturer's latest
drivers for this unit.
