cannot close Windows 2000

My WIndows 200o will not shut down,,I click the shut down
button and it looks like it's going to do something, but
then it doesn't. this just started happening a few months
ago.

Try ctrl-alt-del and then pick the "shut down button". Its
my experience that way is a bit more effective if the
normal shutdown from the start menu does not work.

You could also try to kill some of the processes to try
identify which one is preventing windows from shutting
down. I.E. shurtdown and then ctrl-alt-del > taskmanager
and pick a process by guessing. A good 1st try could be
explorer.exe

Does the problem occur if you boot into safe mode and then try to shut down?
If so, check what is running by using Task Manager.
