Cannot close Internet Explorer

Hello.

Don't know if anyone has any ideas on this, but it's worth a shot.

I'm running XP Professional with all the latest up dates applied (as well as
I can tell anyway)

When I launch Internet Explorer, some odd things happen:

- CPU goes to 100%
- Cannot close the window (e.g. when I press the X in upper right, I get a
"ding" sound, like I hit something invalid)
- The Tab key no longer works!
- The very first screen in Windows Update, just hangs. Never gets to the
Scan option
- I can still surf the internet, (e.g. check my hotmail, go to ebay, etc)
- The only way to close is Task manager, end process tree on IExporer - end
process does nothing

I uninstalled and re-installed Internet Explorer using my XP Pro CD, but it
made no difference.
I use eTrust for Virus protection, did a full scan, and it found nothing.
Since I can't run windows update, I can't tell if there is a new update for
this problem, but I do have automatic updates on and have kept my machine up
to date.

Any ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,
Bob

Bob,
There's a good possibility that this is being caused by a third-party
program (adware, spyware, parasite)

Download, install, *update* and run these two programs:
Ad-aware from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/

Additional information at:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
BHOs and Spyware
http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/spyware.htm#BHOCOP
Bugs, Glitches & Stuffups: http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm

Search for common parasites at http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/

If not caused by malware, consider disabling (for diagnostic purposes)
legitimate programs running in the background which might be interacting
with IE- security, antivirus, etc.

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi Don,

That was it! I installed ad-aware and ran it. It found many (over 25)
different spyware items. I removed them and everything is fine now!

Thank you for your suggestion.

Best Regards,
Bob
