Cannot close Internet Explorer Browser

I am using Windows XP Home Edition which comes with
Internet Explorer Version 6.0
Recently I cannot close the Browser using the "X" close
button or using the close functions in "File" or right
clicking my mouse.
The Browser is functioning normally and I can minimise
and maximise the screen but cannot close. I don't have
any anti-virus programs to check for virus infections but
I always download the Microsoft virus patches when
prompted.
Help Please
