Cannot Close IE6

Guest

I have IE6 SP1 on a Windows 2K machine. After cleaning up some spyware I
cannot close the browser except by using the Task Manager to close the
application. I have tried to "repair" the installation but the problem
persists. Can someone help me solve this problem?

Hi Peter :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Look for restrictions in registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions especially dword value "NoBrowserClose" - if set
to 1 browser will not close

Hope this helps

Hi,
This is usually caused by another program- possibly malware- possibly a
legitimate program. You may not have removed all malware.

Note: You don't have to run all of these programs, if at some point, the
problem is resolved.

Start with BHODemon 2.0: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

Then, download and run CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot (in that order.)
See: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Also note the security tips and other important information on that page.

If unsuccessful with those programs, you may have to post a HijackThis log
to one of the forums listed below. You will receive good help at any of
these forums. You might look for a forum that doesn't have too many
unanswered posts. You should also look for the proper forum for HijackThis
logs and a message along the lines of "Important- Read This First."

Or...
A legitimate program running in the background may be causing this. Disable
(for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers, security,
toolbars and other add-ons for IE, anti-virus, etc. Take a look at any
program that might be interfering with IE. You may have to reinstall, or not
reinstall, a program.

Hope this helps,

Hi Peter :)
Jan,
Thanks - However, I could not find NoBrowserClose key.

Then, even though you have said that you have cleaned the system, and it has
come up clean, I agree with Don's suggestion that, even if you have run the
various scanners and removal tools, and the HiJackThis, there is still
something on your system that is causing the problem. Some variants of
hijackers and malware can replicate themselves repeatedly if they are not
removed properly. You mentioned that you posted a Hijackthis log and it
came back clean. Did you run the AdAware, SypBot and the HijackThis in the
Safe Mode and Hidden files enabled? Some variants can hide in files being
used when Wondows is in use. In order to fully expose them, the scans
should be done in Safe Mode with all hidden files exposed, which does not
load Windsows and allows all files to be scanned and any hiding scumware to
be detected and removed.

I suggest that if you have not done so, that you follow Don's suggestion,
and run all scans in Safe Mode with Hidden files enabled per the following:

Enable Hidden Files

Then post your HijackThis log to one of the following forums for full
analysis:

Follow the instructions to install and run HiJackThis:

Post to one of the forums below:

or Bleeping Computer Forum

Allow the experts there to evaluate your log and advise you of any necessary
steps to clean your system.

follow all posting instructions carefully to avoid having your log deleted
or ignored.

Hope this helps
