Cannot change with the mouse between tasks

I am using Windows XP PRo SP2. Since some hours I have the following
effect.
When I click on any of the tasks button in the taskbar the button turns
blue and blinks three times, but the window does not pop up. When I
choose the same task by selecting over Alt-TAB, the task's window
appears at once (as usual).
What has caused this and do I have a chance to solve it without a
restart? I cannot restart right now, because an important
uninterruptable program (MS-Access97) is running.

Thanks
Klaus

I would use Alt+Tab until the next reboot. It's by far the
easiest option.

Use Alt-Tab now and install Tweakui > General > Focus > Experiment with the settings
