Cannot change my normal template (Office XP)

Hi,

I am using Office XP academic edition. I ma trying to change the default template's fonts margins etc. I usually did this in earlier versions of word by changing the default font from the document I worked, and it changed the normal for all documents. This did not work with Office XP so I opened the normal.dot template, made the changes and resaved the template (say with Arial 11 pt font). Still, whenever I open a new document, some earlier version of Normal comes out (with the Times 12 pt.). THen I go to the Templates/Add-ins, link the file to normal.dot but uncheck automatically update document, and I get my desired font (does not work with margins, bullet styles, etc. though.)

What is going on? Any suggestions? How can I permanantly replace my normal template with the desired changes

This might be caused by your normal.dot template being locked due to a
computer lockup with Word open. Try doing a search in Windows Explorer
(after closing out Word) for a file called "~$normal.dot". If you find it,
delete it and try to make your changes again.

Just one of several possibilities I'm sure!
