Cannot change Home Page.

I had to do a full reinstall of my system (XP SP2 Home on a Gateway). Now I
can't change my Home Page. I tried everything:
1. Ran virus/trojan/spyware checks (it doesn't appear to be the product of a
trojan as it remains on gateway.com)
2. Disabled/removed all anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall programs as
well as toolbars.
3. Disabled everything but the most crucial startup items
4. Relaxed security for Active X components
5. Removed and reinstalled IE Windows component (after System File Check)

Then, I tried a registry change, but to no avail; specifically, I delted the
HomePage value in the following key --
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel
I then downloaded StartPage Guard. I tried to change the home page with that
and I got the following error - RegSetValueEX failed with: 5.

I noticed that for the following Registry keys that either or both of
Default_Page_URL value and the Start Page value are set to www.gateway.com or
www.gatewaybiz.com:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

HKEY_USERS\Default\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Could that be the reason?

== Yes they are the reason because you visited the website and it did
install itself as the main Page or Hijacked your Home page (and also this
website has a flash Alert tell you you need to install Clean drive!), you
need to change both Value to the desired home page.
Select Main and look in the Right Pane for Start Up Page
Change the Home page in the following KEYS:
Click on *Main*
[+]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.

and look in Right Pane/Window and Locate *Start Page* Right
Click on it and select Modify and enter the Data say for ex;
http://www.microsoft.com as your Home page and then Locate also this *Local
Page* and Right Click on it and select Modify and put the following;
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

The same with this KEY:
[+] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
On the *Start Page* change it into http://www.microsoft.com

Leave the *Local Page* as it is if it have this stringe of Data:
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd={SUB_PRD}...... etc

Exit the Registry Eidtor and Reboot your computer and see if the Issue gone
and you have your Home page which is Microsoft.com for Example.
HTH.
Please let us know.

Thank you. I'll try it when I go home later (I can't wait!).

However, is this just changing the default page without solving the problem
of not being able to change the page? In other words, does this set it at
the registry level and keep the new value locked down?

Or will I be able to, in each account on the computer, go to Tools/Internet
Options and be able to type in a new home page and have it stick for each
account (the way I used to be able to)? For example, the admin account is one
thing and I don't mind it being gateway.com, but I also have my personal
account which I would like to set to www.msn.com, and my daughter would like
her home page to be http://www.barbie.com, and my wife, another home page.

Again, thank you for your help.

Hi Steve,
Yes it will change the home page but you need to go the General Tab on IE
Properties to change to the desired Home Page.
Please do not set your Home page to Gateway.com it will n't do good it will
hack you and steal your Info and be a backdoor for Not *good news*, so do not
set it up as home page.
But first try to see if you will be able to change it in the Registry as the
Malware/Virus can block you from changing the Registry let's hope will not be
in your case if it's happen you need to retake permession/ownership to the
registry again and do that in *Safe Mode* read this article on how to take
ownership of a file;
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/community/columns/security/5min/5min-202.mspx?mfr=true.
HTH.
Please if any further help post back to us here and you will get help.

Thanks again, nass.

I just want to make sure. Is the link to the file at the end the correct
one? You mentioned it was an aricle about taking back ownership of a file,
but the article it links to is about Using the Encrypted File System. Am I
missing something?

Thanks.

Options in several third-party applications disallow such changes. These
include Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer, SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper,
Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware, and Zone Alarm (Free
and Pro).

NB: Simply disabling the responsible application won't help. You need to
identify and disable the "homepage protection" while the app is running,
otherwise no changes to the Registry will be made.

Well, I went into the first of the registry keys and it would not let me
change save the changed value!!

But, then, I uninstalled Zonealarm, and now I can change the Home Page - I
guess disabling it, removing it from the start menu and restarting wasn't
enough to check it out. I re-installed, and the problem returned. Removed
it again, and now I can change the Home Page. So, now I am going through a
router and using the Windows firewall. Hope that is enough. I thought
ZoneAlarm fixed this problem!

Thanks for all your very considered help.
I encountered another problem now which does not belong here. I mentioned
it is a reinstall of the system. Now, many of the short cuts to the programs
I installed show up on the other accounts as blank icons and when I go to
launch they say that they cannot find the .exe. When I browse to the
Program File to reconnect it, it won't let me in on the non-Owner account
(the Owner account is fine). How frustrating!
