Cannot burn a DVD

I have a movie I saved to my computer in AVI format. I want to burn this
movie to a DVD disc in DVD format so I can play it on most regular home DVD
players. When I tried to do this with Movie Maker, it took 2 hours to burn it
and when I tried to play the movie on my DVD player, the DVD player showed it
as an MP3 and it wouldn't play the movie. Upon reading through the FAQ on
Microsoft's website, I see that you have to save the movie in DVD format
before burning it but the trouble is I didn't have that option. The FAQ
showed Movie Maker has 20-30 formats you could save your movie in, one of
those being DV format, and my Movie Maker program is only showing about 10 of
these. How do I get the rest of them and will this solve my problem?

Many thanks!
