cannot browse with IE6

While cleaning out a computer infested with spyware, IE5.5
stopped working.

The error msg when I try to open the browser is "Explorer
has caused an error in <unkown>. Explorer will now
close. ...try restarting your computer." I can't load
even the homepage.

I installed IE6, but got the same msg when I try to go
online.

The IE repair tool (KB194177) didn't pick up anything
unusual.

I'm connected through a LAN, and I can access the other
computers on the LAN with no problems.

Any ideas on what to do next?

Thanks.

Error messages <unknown> are almost always Spyware related in IE.
Run SpyBot Search & Destroy or Lavasoft's Ad-aware.
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Download and install either of the two applications, read the overview
and FAQ, get the updates using the Online > Update feature & run a scan.
Use these just like you would your pre-installed anti-virus scanner.

I ran both Ad-aware and Spybot, but IE still won't run.
It detects proxy, the status bar says opening page
cnn.com, and a blank page shows with an error msg, then it
closes.

What should I try next?

My LAN is not on a proxy server, disable the proxy detection
and see if IE loads.
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections
"Tab" > LAN Settings "Button" > Uncheck all.

Please post back with your findings.

I unchecked everything in the LAN settings, but I get the
msg 'rundll32 has caused an error in ws2_32.dll, and will
now close.' When I hit the Close button, I get back a
blank screen, and I have to reboot. When I check the
tasks window, Explorer (I assume that's Windows Explorer)
is not there.

If I try Outlook Express (v6.0 also), it gives me an error
msg 'socket error 11001, Error number 0x800ccc0d'. Is
there a problem with the socket? How do I repair it?

I'm thinking of reinstalling WinME to fix this. How do I
make sure that IE gets installed clean? That is, what
files/registry entries should I remove first? I don't
want to do a clean install of WinME because it's a
friend's machine, and I don't want to mess with all her
applications.

Thanks for your prompt response.

It would appear that you have too many unrecoverable errors.
(That depends on the extent to which you wish to troubleshoot
all the issues).
If you so choose to re-install Win Me, here are
several articles on the subject.

Both URL's are MS-MVP sites.

Post back if we can be of further assistance to you.

I tried to reinstall ME following the instructions in the
website, but got the same error. I then clean installed
ME from a floppy and CD ROM, also no good. This is after
scanning for malware with both Adaware and Spybot, and
Norton Antivirus.

I finally reformatted the HDD, and clean installed ME, and
reinstalled all the apps. Problem solved, the hard way!
