I am on Windows Server 2003 running IE 6 and for some reason we have lost the
ability to browse the internet on this server. everything looks normal, we
are able to ping external websites successfully. also we are able to hit
internal websites but whenever we try to go to google or anywhere external it
times out eventually saying internet explorer cannot open the page. any
ideas on what is causing this??
THanks
Joe

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0,
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

ty for the reply,
but i think it isnt spyware of any sort. this is a production server that
only acts an IIS server for our Insurance agency managment system. i am
thinking there is some kind of winsock corruption, but i am not sure how to
fix it on Windows Server 2003. like i said we are able to ping and do
tracert successfully but everything else fails. windows updates cannot even
connect to download updates and it logs errors in the event viewer every
couple hours. do you have any ideas on what could be causing this or how to
fix it?

Thanks,
Joe

Checking for hijackware should be your first order of business. You must,
at minimum, rule /out/ the possibility.

Otherwise, any number of security-related applications (e.g., AV; firewall;
IIS) and settings could be involved here, plus any proxies. It's really
more of a Win2003 problem than an IE problem.
...windows updates cannot even
connect to download updates

If this is sudden, new behavior, a hijackware infection should not be
dismissed out of hand.

Did you hear of DOS attack?
Try to check the evnt viewer and the Firewall Event Log to see what is going
On!
Open a command Prompt and type these command:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]
Reboot the server, does it help?

When you telling PA it is not Mlaware/Virus issue how do you know and what
steps taken to be sure of this statement?
HTH,

Try contacting your Internet Service Provider and see if you can get free
technical support or even if it not free it might be worth it to pay them or
someone to fix it.
Best Regards,
Kaja
