I am using a windows xp desktop machine. I had previously
connected to the internet with this machine via cable
broadband but have since moved and am now attempting to
connect via dial up. I had some trouble getting even the
connection made, but that seems to have been fixed. Now
that I have finally made the connection, again via dial
up, i cannot browse in either MS Explorer, or Netscape. I
keep getting error messages, displaying in their own
window, such as..."internet explorer could not open the
search page" and in the case of Netscape..."www.google.com
could not be found. Please check..." It's as if there is
no connection to the outside world at all, even though the
dial up connection has been made. I can use my laptop on
the same phone line and cord with no trouble. I have
deleted and reset the dial up connection a few times with
no change.

Running Window xp home edition ver. 5.1 service pack 1

Any help would be great. Thanks.

do you have a firewire device installed?
if so, this is a rather common problem with xp, there
doesn't appear to be a fix available yet.
you must restore your system prior to the firewire device
being installed to get internet connectivity back.
google groups for "firewire xp" for all the gruesome
details.
good luck
