Hi!

Was downloading a large file last night (have firewall & anti-virus running
at the time) and when I switched on my monitor this morning, my PC had
crashed - when I tried to reboot I could only get to the windows screen -
tried to reboot and revert my hard drive using Roxio Go Back - no success -
tried to boot with F8 'last known good configuration' with no luck, lastly
tried to boot into safe mode and restart from there - don't know the result
of that as I had to leave for work but don't hold out much hope - has anyone
got any help before I bite the bullet and consider reinstalling win 2k pro
from my CD.

Would booting back into safe mode and uninstalling certain programs help?

You might want to take this in stages and see. I am doubtful that you will boot into safe mode if you are not getting past the
splash screen unless you're getting hung on the sound driver which tends to load about 3/4 of the way on the progress bar. But try
safe mode. If no joy then boot with your CD, select repair using the recovery console. If you are able to get to the prompt, type
"chkdsk [drive_letter]: /p /r" without the quotes, checking your system root drive first then subsequent drives. The chkdsk will
most likely need a half hour to run for each volume. After, see if you can boot, if the harddrive isn't trashed. If not, boot
again with the CD and try repair from the emergency repair process, select fast repair. After this, if you are still stck, attempt
a repair operating system install by entering setup from the CD then progress to clean install if need be.
