Hi Bijan,

Have you tried updating the drives firmware..?

What is the make & model for the optical dirve..?

Might check the Upper & Lower filters for the optical drives..? The easiest
way to check without going into the registry, would be to go to Device
Manager, open DVD/CD-ROM drives, right click one of your optical drives,
select properties from the menu, Details tab, you should see "Device
Instance Id" and a drop down arrow (v), click it, move the mouse pointer
down the list to highlight Device Upper filters and click it, do the same
for the Device Lower filters, Class Upper & Lower filters as well to see and
take note of their contents.. Also, there should be just 4 MS signed drivers
in the Drivers tab, driver details button, driver files details window, may
want to check, your call..

MS signed drivers: cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, storprop.dll (if you
see others they may be causing exclusive lock issues)

What, if any extra drivers/entries do you see in the filters or on the
drivers tab..?

Please list them if you would, thanks..

Cheers

Hi Jaymon
I have two more drives that have not been signed they are:
C:\ WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\GEARAspiWDM.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\PxHelp20.sys
are they causing the problem? if so what should i do?
and if they are not causing the problem than what is?
thank you for your respond

Hi Jaymon!
Thank you for your advice.
I checked both my CD drives in Device Manager and this is what I have:
Drivers: cdrom.sys
imapi.sys
pfc.sys (this is the exra one)
redbook.sys
storprop.dll

IDE DVD-ROM 16X SCSI CdRom Device:
Upper filt.: redbook, the Lower filt and Upper Classes entries are empty,
Lower Classes: Pfc

TOSHIBA CD/DVDW SD-R5372 SCSI CdRom Device:
Upper Filt. redbook, Lower Filt. imapi, there is no entry for Upper Classes,
Lower Classes Pfc.

I would also like to ask you how I should go about updating firmware and
whether the fact that I have installed and used Windows Vista RC2 for a
couple of months might have to do with the problem.
Thanks again!
I appreciate your help.

Hi elsa,

http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storage/pci.asp?page=PCI=ISH_PRS&stype=product&model=SDR5372
Does this look like the one you have, be sure, follow instructions..
Check your current firmware version before you attempt to change it, use the
Nero infotool from the site below to see how to find the ID string for the
drive you have and firmware version, take note.. Please verify, the above
link for your drive is correct, please..
http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/NeroInfotool/neroinfotool.html

The cdgone.zip should contain a cdgone.reg file that you can merge to clear
the filters, the 4 MS drivers will reinstall at bootup..
http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip If you are unsure try the Doug Knox
fix, does the same thing..
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm (credos to the
above cdgone.zip)
Try the fix first, the firmware as a last option, your call..
Be careful and post your results..

Hi Jaymon,

I followed your advice and now the drivers are OK and my Toshiba drive
firmware is up to date (thanks for the links), the problem, however, persists.
I have CD-ROM first in BIOS boot sequence but my PC still boots straight
into Windows. There is not even a prompt to boot from CD.
Maybe it's not a hardware problem but I don't know what else to think of.

Try a different bootable CD, perhaps a McAfee or Norton CD,
or any CD you know should boot.

Hi elsa,

Look this over and see if it can help or applies to your situation..

http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch03s06.html

The above link may provide some relative info..

To boot from a SCSI CD-ROM drive, set the SCSI controller so that BIOS
support for bootable CD-ROM is enabled.

You must also select ``boot from SCSI'' in the system BIOS.

Once the SCSI BIOS and the system BIOS are set, put the bootable CD-ROM in
the CD-ROM drive and boot the system.

Hi !
The problem is my CdRom drives are not SCSI.
I tried deleting them but when windows redetects them they still appear as
SCSI devices. I thought it was only virtual drives that appeared like that.

I have also looked in the Registry and found these entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\CdRomIDE_DVD-ROM_16X_________________________7.92____
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE\CdRomTOSHIBA_CD/DVDW_SD-R5372________________TU31____

but also:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI\CdRom&Ven_IDE&Prod_DVD-ROM_16X&Rev_7.92
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI\CdRom&Ven_MagicISO&Prod_Virtual_DVD-ROM&Rev_1.0A
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI\CdRom&Ven_TOSHIBA&Prod_CD/DVDW_SD-R5372&Rev_TU31
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI\CdRom&Ven_TOSHIBA&Prod_CD/DVDW_SD-R5372&Rev_TU53
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI\CdRom&Ven_TOSHIBA&Prod_CD/DVDW_SD-R5372&Rev_TU55
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI\CdRom&Ven_TOSHIBA&Prod_CD/DVDW_SD-R5372&Rev_TU56
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI\CdRom&Ven_ZN4509T&Prod_AXA750Q&Rev_2.0B
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI\Disk&Ven_WDC_WD12&Prod_00JB-00GVC0&Rev_08.0

The only SCSI device should have been the hard disk and not the CdRom.
Is there any way to solve this problem? Should I unistall any drivers perhaps?
The only driver I have which might be related to this is VIA HyperionPro.
Any help?
Thanks.

Maybe this information is important:

I have found that when I disable VIA VT6410 RAID Controller in Device
Manager the CdRom entries disappear. So if CD-ROM drives are on RAID how do I
boot from them?

Hi elsa,

http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/peripherals/serial-ata_raid/

Might look over the above link, may be a support forum here that can address
the issue, your having..

Not sure if it is a good idea to have the CD drive on a raid controller, my
guess would be to connect it too the secondary IDE controller as a (M)
master or (S) slave, with the jumpers set accordingly..
However, if the IDE data cable has a device that is set to (CS) cable select
the CD-ROM drive should be set to (CS) as well..

Without knowing your systems specs and or who setup the raid controller in
the 6 month gap since the CD drive worked, might indicate perhaps a
connection was made to the raid (if actually a new card or onboard..?) card
in error, with the CD drive and a HDD on the same cable, that was originally
connected to one or the other IDE channels..?
So, you might just need to remove the CD drive from the data cable and
reconnect it to a free connector on an IDE cable coming off the mobo, if one
exists.. There also could be an indication in the BIOS or separate BIOS for
the raid controller too, though I am not sure if a CD-ROM is raid worthy to
begin with, this may be the problem..

With the Everest Home app, start it and click the (+) next to "computer",

Hi there Elsa,

I must say you're a persistent gal.. ;D
Sure do love Greek cuisine and pastries, yummy..!

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=1856
This is your mobo, right..? If so get your updates here, when you need to..

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products...oard&ProductID=1856&ProductName=GA-8I915G Duo
Scroll down to Internal I/O Connectors see this 2 x UltraDMA 133 IDE (For
HDDs only)

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Manual_DownloadFile.aspx?FileType=Manual&FileID=16456
See the manual (above link) for the Raid and IDE controller, HDD
installation, BIOS settings, etc., for more info or just download the PDF
file..

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
If you don't have Adobe or just want a simple & fast PDF reader might try
foxit PDF reader, if you desire to..

Looks like you may need to read the setup instructions for the HDD and CD
drives and make sure that if you are not using the Raid controller that you
follow the instructions on how to setup the drives without it enabled.. I
noticed that it mentions the Raid connector on the mobo is next to the IDE
connector too, it may be that the cable was knocked lose during the graphics
card installation and reconnected to the raid controller in error..?

Hope this can help you elsa..
Post your results..

on the same channel any more but I don't know if this is the problem since
the cd-rom drives are detected later on. Do you think I should change the
way
my hard drives and cd-rom drives are connected?

Thanks a million!
Until this morning I was too scared to mess with the jungle of cables in
that box but the problem was as simple as that: They had connected the cd-rom
to IDE2 while in the motherboard manual it's clearly stated it should be
connected to IDE1. So I changed that and everything works fine! Now I know
exactly how everything is connected in there.
Thanks again!

Cheers

Hi elsa,

Might look over the above link, may be a support forum here that can
address
the issue, your having..

Not sure if it is a good idea to have the CD drive on a raid controller,
my
guess would be to connect it too the secondary IDE controller as a (M)
master or (S) slave, with the jumpers set accordingly..
However, if the IDE data cable has a device that is set to (CS) cable
select
the CD-ROM drive should be set to (CS) as well..

Without knowing your systems specs and or who setup the raid controller
in
the 6 month gap since the CD drive worked, might indicate perhaps a
connection was made to the raid (if actually a new card or onboard..?)
card
in error, with the CD drive and a HDD on the same cable, that was
originally
connected to one or the other IDE channels..?
So, you might just need to remove the CD drive from the data cable and
reconnect it to a free connector on an IDE cable coming off the mobo, if
one
exists.. There also could be an indication in the BIOS or separate BIOS
for
the raid controller too, though I am not sure if a CD-ROM is raid worthy
to
begin with, this may be the problem..

With the Everest Home app, start it and click the (+) next to "computer",
