locked a portion of the file."

How can I determine what is keeping my PST file open?

Outlook is probably keeping your PST open. Use Task Manager to see if any
process named "OUTLOOK.EXE" exists.

I checked that Brian and don't see any refrence to outlook at all, what
other applications could do that. I had heard that a desktop search
engine (Copernicus maybe?) was a culprit with others but I don't run a
program like that.

See if you have anything mentioned here:

I went through the list line for line. None of the processes are
running on my system. I've just tried disabling Norton to see if it was
a virus protection issue... to no avail. I need to reload Windows very
soon as it's starting to flake out and am getting nervous about not
having my PST backed up. Are ther other options I can take to copy this
file?

Can you copy the PST with Windows Explorer after a fresh reboot BEFORE you
start Outlook? If not, can you do so if you log in while holding down the
Shift key? If not, boot to safe mode and then copy the PST. That certainly
will work.

Brian, I was able to copy the PST as you suggested (before opening
Outlook). I also found something else interesting though. I used
SyncBack (before opening Outlook on a fresh reboot) and I was able to
backup the file but then I attempted to open Outlook and let it backup
and it was back to the same error.
In other words both SyncBack and Outlook's backup function will not
work after Outlook has been opened. I would assume that Outlook is
keeping the PST open for some reason, I was thinking it was another
process that was the culprit.
Would you suggest a reinstall of Office now that I have the PST backed
up?

Since Outlook opens the PST with exclusive access, naturally no other
program, including a backup program, can access the PST simultaneously.
That's always been true.

No. Reinstalls rarely solve Outlook problems. You must have Outlook closed
if you intend to backup the PST, plain and simple.

I guess I should have said, "If I open Outlook and then close it I
cannot do a backup using SyncBack" But I can do it if I re-boot THEN
run SyncBack without opening Outlook. I understand you can't run a
backup while Outlook is open. My thought was that Outlook is keeping
the PST open NOT a seperate program. So my question is; should I
uninstall Outlook then import my PST that I was able to save with
SyncBack?

Which is proof you have some add-in or other application keeping Outlook
open, thus locking the PST.

There's no reason to uninstall Outlook and you never have to import a PST.
Just open it in Outlook with File>Open>Outlook Data File.

I appreciate your response Brian but I haven't really been able to fix
my problem since I have no idea how to find out what is keeping the PST
open.
Are you saying it may be an Office application? they only type add-in
I've applied is Sounds and also the backup utility. Other than that is
there a type of non-Microsoft app that accesses a PST? Thanks again.

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.

ARGGGH..well I tried every suggestion that you gave Milly with no luck.
I did have a PDA in cradle, I do have Norton doing real time scans but
after disabling both I still can't back up. Suggestions 2 and 3 don't
apply and I'm not sure what #4 refers to (COM Add-ins). I guess I'll
just need to do manual backups after rebooting using SyncBack. I have
this 'work-around' but things like this drive me nuts and I feel
compelled to find a fix.

Still with the copying outlook.pst problem. I've found that if Norton is
installed a file called ccApp.exe is monitering outlook.pst and won't allow
anything to copy it (doing its job as Norton). But how can I turn off Norton
completely without uninstalling it. I've trying turning it off in Nornton
Settings but that does not work. I've tried shutting down ccApp.exe with
Precess Explorer but it won't do it. Any suggestions?

I use Norton Corporate 7.6, it has a 'unload antivirus service' radio
button when you open it. I unloaded and copied my PST then re-enabled
the option. Outpost, Can you also not backup your PST?
