cannot backup files with cd /dvd writer

Are you trying to use the built-in Windows backup program? It's a very
primitive program with very few options. Among the things it can't do is
write to a CD.

If you must use this program, you need to write to the hard drive, then copy
from the hard drive to the CD. A much better solution is a third-party
backup program like Acronis True Image.
 
Backup in xp isnt very good,to back-up,use the file transfer wizard and run
it from the xp cd.Once opened,set as old computer,select the files,data for
it to save,save to a new folder you created,once data is collected,move
folder
to a cd.....
