As per XP help instructions, I put a shortcut to a program in my
...../start/programs/autostart/ folder but it does not run when windows
starts up! Where am I going wrong?

Yes it is called "startup" and contains a shortcut to keyboard Express which
is an old W95 programme that I like using all the time

Does this program have an option dialog or something so you can make it
start on startup instead of just putting it in that folder....

The correct name of the folder is neither ..../start/programs/autostart/
nor startup. Put the shortcut in

C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Substitute the correct name for "Your User Name."

Sorry guys - I was using my faulty memory! The file in fact is in
\My User Name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and is an old W95 program that
does not offer any method of automating it's start

No, that's not correct either. First, note that it's a *folder*, not a file.
Second, you've omitted the first part of the name, the C:\Documents and
Settings\... part. The full name, as I said, is
C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

and is an old W95 program
that does not offer any method of automating it's start

It doesn't matter. The program doesn't automate its start, Windows does.
Just put a shortct to the program in the correct folder.
