My Boss just got a new dell. I pluged it in and off we
go. I setup the machine and it works great. I try to
attach it to the local domain and it comes back with this
error. "The Following error occurred attemting to join
the domain "CEM": The specified server cannot perform the
requested operation."
This is a brand new XP Pro computer. We have a Dell
server running 2000 adv. server. It is the only server
in the office. We have 10 other machines in the office
that are attached to the domain. I am also a programmer,
not an admin. I inherated the admin duties when are
admin left about a month ago and I am lost here. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the network settings especially TCP/IP setting matches your other
machines in the office that are able to join the domain. If possible,
look on the PC that has the same OS, if not, look for Win2K system.

I have checked with my computer (2K) and another (XP pro) and the ipsettings are all the same with one difference. The wins server was set, so I chaged the win server on the new machine to be the same as the other XP machine. It still gave me the same error

John Burris MCP,

For your 2K domain to work properly, your DNS must be pointed to your own
DNS server.

When trying to join a computer to a domain, it sometimes helps to make an
entry in the host file pointing to your DC.
