Cannot assign a static address to an ethernet adapter

On several Win2K machines, after updating from the
Microsoft Update page, the ethernet adapter will only work
with a DHCP address. If I try to set a statis address, the
machine reboots.

Did the update page install a new network card driver? If the driver was
updated go to the site of the manufacturer of your network card adapter and
download the latest Microsoft WHQL driver if available. Go to Network
Adapter in Device Manger and uninstall the network driver. Follow the
instructions from the manufacturer on how to install the network adapter
driver. Once that is install test to see if you can set the address
dynamically.

If the update page did not install a new network driver what did it update?
