Cannot Always Allow

Every time my antivirus updates, Defender prompts me to allow it. According
to the help file, I can choose "Always Allow" in the detections list to add
it to the "Allowed" (safe list).

But there is no such option. I can either "Allow" or "Ignore" for that one
time only. The next time the same app by "Network Associates" runs, I'll get
prompted again.

Grrr.

I agree. However, there is a caveat in the helpfile that not all the options
it describes are as yet implemented.

You can set the exact path and file that trgiggers the alert in the box
under advanced section of tools/options. You will then not get alerted,
although an event log will still be created.
You can find the path and file by looking in History. Highlight one of those
aleerts and in the bottom box it gives it under File.
