Cannot add email addresses

I have Earthlink Cable Internet. I use their email program, but want to try Outlook 2003 as I just received Office 2003. I have been using Outlook Express for a year with no problems. My problem is that Outlook 2003 will not allow me to change an email address, or to add an email address. When I add a contact in Address book, typing in the email address of course, and then attempt to save it, the email address immediately vanishes. The contact is saved but without the email address. If I go to send out a email message, there is an error message, and this is inserted before the email address "=SMTP=". Example " [email protected]" and the email is not sent. Any ideas?

The Address Book was never intended for data entry. Use the Contacts Folder
for that.

Thanks for replying. I did not explain all that clearly. I cannot add email addresses. Either through the Address Book or through Contacts. Example, if I add a person in my Contacts folder and I am putting in their address, phone number, email address, etc. etc. Then when I select to save the email address disappears but all other data remains. Does that make sense

Also, if I just go into New Email to send out a message and I enter a email address, when I select send, the email will not go and the address has this inserted in the front "=SMTP=". This is absolutely WIERD. Now, I am sure if I have the email account set up correctly or not. Outlook Express worked with no problems. I have tested my POP3 account and it works, but something is not set up correctly perhaps. Thanks.

What information store are you using? Personal Folders File or Exchange
mailbox?
Did your Contacts Folder ever function correctly?

Also, I believe that I am in the Outlook Today folder and not
Personal Folder but I am not 100% sure of this (I am at work
presently).

If you're not using Exchange as the mail store, Outlook Today _is_ your
Personal Folders file.

I don't speak for Smiths, and Smiths doesn't speak for me.

I assume you are using a local information store (PST file), then, not
Exchange Server. In that case, try running the Inbox Repair Tool on your PST
file. Also, tell me how you "imported" these Contacts. Importing is almost
never a good idea. Far better simply to reuse your PST file.

Thanks for your response. Yes, the Contacts Folder feature was working
fine before I installed Office 2003 (Outlook 2003). Actually, I had both
Outlook Express (that came with Windows XP) and Outlook 97 (that I had with
Office 97) and the contacts feature worked fine. I have contacts that were
imported into Outlook 2003 when I used it for the first time. All of the
imported contacts work fine. I can email using the existing email address.
But, if I try to change their email address--uh uh. Outlook 2003 will not
let me. Also, I believe that I am in the Outlook Today folder and not
Personal Folder but I am not 100% sure of this (I am at work presently).

Thanks again for responses. I am using *.pst. Also, my mistake, I am using the personal folder. Not using Microsoft Exchange. The contacts imported automatically, or were already there because of Office 97 (Outlook 97). I have not used Inbox Repair, I will do this immediately and let you know what happens. But, why when I add a new contact, everything is saved BUT the email address? This is the wierd part.

I suspect a corrupted PST file. How exactly did you create this file? Did
you simply do an inplace upgrade of Outlook from Outlook 97 to Outlook 2003?
If so, you may need both to repair your PST file and create a new Outlook
profile. I've never seen anyone try to jump 4 entire versions in one
upgrade.

Thanks again Russ. Well, no success. Did inbox repair...same result. .PST file must have transferred from Outlook 97. <I've never seen anyone try to jump 4 entire versions in one upgrade.> Is there another way to do it (I figure that I've saved over $1000...at least!). Thanks for your help though. I'll try Microsoft's tech support.

Did you try the new profile? That fixes most problems that arise from
upgrades.
