Cannot access shared passworded drives or folders on win98SE fromwin xp home

Since installing a bunch of updates to my win xp home edition machine on
1/20/05 I have been unable to access any password protected drives and
folders on any of my win98SE machines (share access is turned on) from
my winxp HE. I have followed the trouble shooting steps recommanded in
the newsgroup (enable netbui, enabling guest account on winxphe etc.) and
downloaded and followed the MS information in their filesharing.doc and
FP_Tshoot.doc files to no avail. Everything works fine if I remove the
password protection on the win98SE shared drives and folders. When it
is turned on no matter how I try to access them (via run call to
\\machinename\sharename or via network neighborhood I get to the login
screen which now has \\machinename\guest and enter the password and the
screen blinks and comes right back. Even on shares that only have a
password for full access and a blank for read access the blank entry is
not accepted either. I am at my wits end and figure the only thing left
is to remove all those updates and unless someone has another idea.
(Special note: I have not installed SP2 because it will cause me to many
troubles).

I'm not sure, but here's a possible solution.

There's a bug in Windows XP that occurs when another computer's name
includes a space, that computer has a shared disk or folder with a
password, and Windows XP tries to access the share.

If the win98SE computers have names that include spaces, remove the
spaces from their names, reboot them, and try accessing them from XP
again.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve but I checked when you told someone else
and none of my machines, drives or folder names have any spaces. The
problem seems to be the addition of the username "guest" after the
machinename in the login box (\\machine1\guest). I don't believe that
it was there until after the updates. Would a list of the updates be
helpful?

You're welcome. I always see the user name as "computer\Guest" when
accessing 98 from XP, so I don't think that's the problem.

When I enter an incorrect password, the screen blinks and comes right
back, just like you describe. If you're sure that you're entering the
correct password, I don't know what the problem is.

Sure, list the updates. That might help someone solve the problem.

Its not the password since I can log onto the same shared drives or
folders from one win98se to another win98se using the password with no
problem. When I do the win98se logon screen uses "\\machinename\C" for
instance for the shared C drive not "\\machinename\guest" as the winxphe
logon screen does. It seems that winxphe is not passing the name of
shared device at the logon time or something. I have tried using run,
cmd and then \\machinename\C but the same logon screen shows up. I
might add everything had been working for nearly 2 years before I
installed the following updates - all beging with KB:
871250
873339
873376
883357
885835
885836
890175
891711
Anyone having similar problems and maybe a solution?
