Cannot access read only document - filename -

A friend of mine is getting the above message when he
tries to open a spreadsheet he has saved onto a zip disk.
I got him to check the properties and he says the read
only bit is not on, only the archived bit.
He may have a copy of it on his hard disk, I tried to get
him to do a search but he couldnt find it - could that
cause the problem?
Anything else? I did a search on google and the only hits
related to saving files not opening them....
