Cannot access my server anymore

Here is the problem:

I have rented a dedicated Windows Server 2003 at a osting site in California (I am in Europe myself).

It took me 3 months to get them to help me access the darned thing, but in the end they told me to load 'Remote Desktop' on my Windows XP Pro PC here at home.
They then 'activated' something on the server, and finally I could see the folders on it, and start using it in a 'normal' way.

This week the remote access stopped working.

The Hosts Helpdesk now tells me I need to get a TS CAL to get further access to the server, because they used a 90 days temp license (???).

All fine and dandy, but I am a relative 'layman' and have no clue as to
1) WHAT I need to purchase (yes, a TS CAL..... but a Device one, User CAL ???)
2) How much it would cost
3) How I need to get it installed on that server (since I cannot access it)
4) WHERE I can buy it as a private person ( I do not have a company to get a Volume license or anything ;-) )

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Francois,

end the contract with this hosting site and find another one!
*Everything* that you describe indicates that they are not fit to
do the job.

What they obviously have done is to activate "Terminal Services"
on the server, to give you access to it, using your Remote Desktop
client ( = rdp client = terminal server client).
Full blown Terminal Services allows an unlimited number of
concurrent connections, and is meant to give multiple users access
to applications that are installed on the server. TS requires a TS
CAL for every user or device which connects, which must be
installed on a TS Licensing Server. The first 90 days, it works
with temporary licenses.

What they *should* have done is to enable "Remote Desktop for
Administration". This gives you a maximum of 3 concurrent
connections to the server, for administrative purposes. It does
*not* require additional licenses.

My guess is that they have very limited experience with 2003, and
more with Windows 2000. In W2000, both Remote Desktop for
Administration and full blown Terminal Services were installed
from the Control Panel - Terminal Services. In 2003, Remote
Desktop doesn't have to be installed anymore, only enabled,
exactly like in XP. Many people who switched from W2K to 2003 and
didn't read the WhatsNew made the same mistake of installing
fullblown TS.
