Cannot access my private folder...

Hello all,

I had 2 different desktops; a Sony Vaio and a Dell Dimension 2350. Both had
Windows XP Professional on them. To cut the long story short, the motherboard
for my Dell died on me and instead of buying another one, decided to just
move the harddisk into the Sony Vaio.

I had made my files private in the Dell, and now, I do not have access to my
files even though the username and password were the same prior to the dell
giving up.

Is there a way that I can gain access to my information again? Please note
that the harddisk from the Dell is now the F Drive in my Sony, and my
username as the system owner is the same as what I had on the Dell.

Hello,

what users do you find, when you right-click the Drive -> Properties -> tab
"Security"? If you are not on the list, or you don't have all permissions,
add yourself and give your account all permissions. If this doesn't work,
try gaining ownership over the drive, by clicking "Advanced..." in the tab
"Security" -> Owner -> select your user. Taking ownership could take a
little time.

Please report back if it worked.

Hello again,
I tried checking as you said, but I do not get to see where you share the
drive or folder. Instead, what I get is Local sharing and security

"To share this folder with other users of this computer only, drag it to the
Shared Documents folder

To make this folder and its subfolders private so that only you have access,
select the following check box."

The chec box above is grayed out.

When I click on the Shared Documents link, it takes me to he content of my
shared documents. I was expecting to see the dialog box that asks me what
name I want to share the folder as, and permissions can then be allocated.

Is there something I am missing that is not allowing the system to show me
that?

is no tab called "Security" visible when you right-click the drive in "My
Computer" and click "Properties"?

visible.

You need to disable Simple File Sharing and take ownership of

must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.
