cannot access internet from browsers

I am using a HP desktop with Windows XP Professional. My network
administrator has already installed SP2 for me. I have been using this
machine since the beginning of this year. It works fine and I could
access Internet through our LAN.

The start of the problem is that a few weeks ago I noticed that Windows
Update failed to install any security update since August. Then with
the help of my network admin, I tried several solutions but the problem
was not solved.

Finally, I uninstalled SP2 and install it again. After that, I found I
cannot access Internet using IE and Firefox. But I still can use MSN
Messenger. That means my machine still can access Internet, but just
the browses cannot.

Does anybody have met the similar problem and have a solution?

Thanks a lot!

Did you check that the windows ( or third party) firewall settings allow the
browsers access to the internet.?

Thanks!

I am using only Windows Firewall. No other firewalls. I haven't
changed any firewalls settings to disable internet access. The problem
happened just after I reinstall SP2.

Some configurations of the firewall are set by the network admin and
cannot be changed by me. And other machine in the LAN does not have
such problem.

I have found the unexpected solution in an unexpected way.

I was advised by my network admin that the only solution is to
reinstall the system using the HP recovery CD. So I uninstalled all
application to see what data need to be saved in backup. After I
uninstall Google Desktop Search Engine, the windows update can work and
my browsers can access Internet!!! Maybe it causes some conflicts.

Cheers!
