Cannot access Inernet

R

Ralph Adams

Got a problem getting on the internet with my desktop computer.
Have a home nework with two desktop computers ( only one is actually up and
running ) and two laptop computers. The desktops are hard wired into the
network and the laptops are wi-fi connected.
My desktop was working fine, having internet access and network access. I
was on the internet surfing various sites, eBay, best buy, Circuit city,
etc.
I closed the browser ( Internet Explorer 6 ) and did some work in MS Word.
Tried to get back on the internet and would not connect. Kept getting "
page not found " error. Also error on status bar reads
"opening page res://c:\Windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm"
I have access to the network ( can see and read the two laptops files and
can transfer files back and forth ) so the network is working.
I also cannot get mail on the desktop.
Both laptops can access the internet ( Internet explorer ) and send and
receive mail.
Why can't I access the internet from the desktop..what could have changed
while closing the browser and trying to open it again?
My OS is Windows XP Pro, 256M memory, two forty gig harddrives with approx
15 gig available on each drive

I had already cleaned up all the caches and temp files and cookies so I
just issued the "ipconfig flushdns" command, rebooted and now everything
works fine'
Thank you and Happy Holidays to you.

Hi Ralph,
Try to clear your IE caches, delete internet Files and cookies.
Open a Run Command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK] and Reboot your machine and try to
connect.
If still no joy try this, open a run command and type:
netsh winsock rset click [OK] and and Reboot your machine.
Be sure your computer is Malware free.
P.S do you use SSID and you are on the Right Connection?.
HTH.

I think I was too hasty with my message of being to access the internet
once again.. After running the ipconfig /flush command I actually did get
back on the internet, was able to go to several diferent websites, then I
got the "page not found" error and have have no luck getting back to the
internet. All the caches are cleaned, the temp files deleted, ran Spybot
and Ad-Aware and m av program ( Trend-Micro) with no help.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated

I went thru all the steps you suggested, removed the google toolbar, etc and
still no access to internet. I forgot to mention I am running XP Pro SP1 so
I do not have the 'Manage Add-Ons button ' on the Programs tab for IE. I
also got an error message several times before as follows:

iexplore.exe Application Error
The instruction at "0x10094c3b " referenced memory at "0x01171f68". The
memory could not be "read".
Click OK to terminate the program.

This error has not come up while performing any of the troubleshooting
procedures but appeared a day or two before I first wrote to you and has not
reappeared since.
Could my IE6 be damaged somehow? and is there a way to repair it? or install
a new copy ?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Ralph,
1 = We spoke to early, anyway try to be sure that you are connected to the
Right connection then try to Repair your winsock first and see if that
will
will help:
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html
We have scenario when you turn the * Windows Zero Configuration * OFF from
the Services that can eliminate the Problem so try this Before the Winsock
Repair.

2= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow your browser
been
hooked by Add-ons or Plug-ins On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Networking and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there
Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons (You can Renable them one-by -one
later and see which one will be the culprit and uninstall it or Update
the
Add-Ons if it is Legitimate Add-Ons not a spyware plug-ins).
Click on Advanced tab and scroll down to this Option and uncheck this Box:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest)
and click [OK] to confirm your Changes and Reboot your machine.
Are you getting the IP Automatic or Static from the IP?.
Go to the Device Manager and Check your Adapter Power Option that the
check
box not check for this Option:
[ ] Turn this Device OFF when Idle to save Power.
Run the ipconfig /all and send the Report here.
P.S Do you have other Toolbar installed on your Browser other than IE?.
Peform one step at atime and see which ne will solve the issue.
HTH.

Including the above option?

removed the google toolbar, etc and still no access to internet.

You may have to repeat the repairs to the interface.
From your previous message it appeared that you managed
to get some connectivity restored as a result of using it.

I forgot to mention I am running XP Pro SP1 so
I do not have the 'Manage Add-Ons button ' on the Programs tab for IE.
I also got an error message several times before as follows:

iexplore.exe Application Error

That's what the above option is intended to do, change your symptoms.
Most likely your crash was occurring in one of the BHO it disables.
Now you need to refine that test by rechecking it and leaving some enabled
and retesting so you know which one or combination of them causes
the problem symptom. The easiest way to do that is to use XPsp2's
Manage Add-ons tool. Alternatively you could use a third-party tool
such as BHODemon from DefinitiveSolutions.

Could my IE6 be damaged somehow? and is there a way to repair it? or install
a new copy ?

I think the symptoms are showing that you have bad BHO.
E.g. incompatible third-party applications which are interfering
enough to cause a crash and corrupt the interface.
The latter symptom could be more ominous and indicate
the presence of malware, rather than just a simple crash
due to incompatibility.

Thanks again for your help.

Ralph

Good luck
