Cannot Access Folder Options

Guest

I am running Win XP Home Edition and I need to access the Folder Options to
make Hidden Folders visible for some admin tasks I need to run.

I first tried to go via Control Panel > Appearance & Themes but the Folder
Options link was not there. I then realised that the Folder Options item was
not displayed in any Folder windows (under Tools menu) either

I then went to the Help and Support Centre . Here a search on "Folder
Options" gave me a direct link to Folder Options - but when I click it I get
the error message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on
this computer. Please contact your system administrator"

Needless to say I am the adminstrator and all of the above is being run from
within the admin-enabled account on this PC

Would really appreciate help on how to regain access to the Folder options
functionality. Thanks in advance

It sounds like some application, possibly malware, has configured
restrictions on your computer. I would be sure to scan your computer for
spyware and malware in both regular and safe mode. AdAware SE is a great
free for personal use spyware program if you currently do not have one. For
the specific problem you ask about see if you can open regedit and see if
the registry key below exists and if it does change the value to zero. ---

Many thanks for your response - the regedit fix worked. Really appreciate
the help.

I ran a full cleanup a couple of months ago, using a number of spyware /
malware tools including Adaware, following an Antivirus Gold (spit)
infection. Also made sure I locked the door solid afterwards with Norton
Internet Security - it is a bit of a drag on the system but so far has kept
everything out despite a permanant broadband connnection and 24 x 7 usage by
teenage kids!

I'll follow your advice and do another Adaware sweep however just to make
sure.

Thanks again

May I be permitted to join the discussion?
I have a similar but apparently a multiple of problems. I have WinXP (Media
Center Edition) SP3 installed on Dell 1505. The computer is configured for
use by me and my daughter. There are various differences in folders that
appear in my and her settings. For example, 'Folder Options' does appear in
my Control Panel and also under Tools(but not in hers). However, in both
settings, the Start>Control Panel>Folder Options or Start>My
Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View>Show hidden folders ...... is deactivated.
I click the button for 'Show hidden folders ...' , click Apply and then OK
but nothing happens. I go back and see that the button for 'Hide folders
......' has a dot in it as before. Similarly, if I right click the cursor on a
picture and want to send it to a mail recipient, it goes out but nothing
happens in her case. Will the solution that worked for Spencer Marlow work
for me too?
I have Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, Spyware Doctor, Windows Defender and MS
Malicious Software Removal Tool in addtion to avast! anti- virus. I have also
scanned my computer with PrevX CSI and Kaspersky but no malware or virus has
been detected by them. Could I please be guided as to where the fault lies
and how do I go about resolving it.
I shall also be grateful I could be advised whether it is possible to
transfer one person's settings to the other person's settings on the same
computer.

Much obliged, Buster. In the exhilaration of finding a problem and a solution
similar to that I was facing, I had not observed, thru an oversight, the
dates of the question and the answer. As advised, I have posted my problems
as a new question and I hope some one experienced in this aspect of Windows
XP will come to my rescue. Thanks you once again.
